Excellent quality and complete package with variable eyepiece, I just added a Manfrotto tripod and video head. It is a lightweight package that works at the range for precision rimfire as well as viewing distant images of wildlife and such. I’m going to try my hand at digisoping and I thing Pentax only makes mounts for their proprietary lens mounts.
I can’t say enough good things about Optics Planet in terms of the value, free shipping, and fast service. I will also add the product came packed carefully and securely, shipped Coast to Coast in less than a week.
Best Used for:
- Range use, viewing nature

Very clear. Nice quality. Uses 1.25” eyepieces. This is a wonderful scope. Checks all the boxes. I bought it because it is better than the cheaper scopes and as clear as the more expensive scopes.

My first burned up in a forest fire, along with my house and everything I owned. Fortunately, with good insurance, I was soon looking for another scope. Just like the first time, I wanted a great scope that was NOT made in China! I also wasn't quite ready to pay the prices that German scopes command. Make no mistake, you are getting a scope that, in comparison, is as good as any human eye can detect!
Birding people can be some of the whiniest and most snively little creatures you will ever meet. However, they are demanding. They absolutely rave over this scope. "Nuff said.....
Pros:
- great optics
- feels solid
- well protected
Cons:
- rear lens cover a tad loose
- same limitations any high power scope has
Best Used for:
- hunting
- shooting
- Birding
- ANY long distance viewing

My wife and I were looking for a spotting scope that would work great for spotting hummingbirds, but did not want to exceed $1000.00.After reading a lot of reviews and consulting with other birders we bought the Pentax. Wow did we make the right decision ! The optics are very clear and allow us to stay longer at dusk because of the light gathering. This is very comparable to the famous european brands for a much better price. We are very satisfied with our purchase and Optics Planet came thru with a great price and very quick delivery.Definetely a 5 star purchase. Thank you,Optics Planet. Colibri1
Pros:
- Ease of use
- Price and warranty
- Zoom capabilities and picture quality
- Optics, feel and ruggedness
- ability to reach out
Best Used for:
- Birding
- Long Range Accuracy
- Rifle range
- Moon Viewing

I am very happy I purchased the Pentax PF-80ED-A 80mm ED Glass Angled Spotting Scope. I climbed the Robinson Preserve Tower located in Bradenton Florida. From the tower I looked northeast and I was very easily able to see the occupants in cars on the SkyWay Bridge from St Pete to Bradenton, 7 miles away! For real.
I bought this scope because at the rifle range the spotting scopes they provide are only good up to 150 yards, and I hit targets 300 yards and beyond. I am able to see my 5.56 round impacts on the paper target 300 yards away.
This scope is durable and top lawyer is some kinda awesome material that makes it sturdy. I would have no problem taking this into the woods or use during rainy conditions. It also comes with a cordura nylon soft case with handles and hooks for a sling.
Very happy and work the money.

I have been needing a good spotting scope for years to support my shooting hobby. As I began reading reviews, etc. the list is daunting. I did have a price in mind but I learned years ago “you get what you pay for”. I also acquired a very sturdy tripod with great adjustments. Viewing wildlife around the yard was with great clarity. I tested it several times at dusk for light gathering and it out performs my new Leupold and Nikon rifle scopes. Very impressive. At the range, identifying 22 cal holes at 300 yds is no problem. For the same money, I cannot believe there is something out there that will out perform this glass.
Pros:
- clear and easy to adjust
- solid mount connection
- very nice bag that can be partially opened and still usable on tripod.
Cons:
- For some it might be a little bulky but works fine for range work it does not matter

This scope is quite nice. The clarity through its range is excellent. I can easily see bullet holes on targets out to 300 yards in most conditions and beyond with proper lighting on splatter type targets. The optics are superior for the price point. This is a large scope and needs a sturdy tripod or bench clamp system for proper stability. It is not recommended for long range hiking due to its size but using from a truck or for a day trek a very good choice. This scope works well for bird and wild life watching. I like the interchangeable eye-pieces for differing ranges but I would like to find an eye-piece with a ranging reticle. Overall I am extremely pleased with this scope.
Pros:
- optical quality and clarity
Cons:
- Large. No reticle for range estimating
Best Used for:
- Target shooting to 300 yards

I bought this scope for siting targets at long distances after considering other manufacturers. Based on some reviews, this appeared to be comparable to optics costing nearly twice as much. The image quality is clear throughout the zoom range, and the weight was also suitable for mobility. There is an included carrying case bag that will fit the main scope body with the eye piece attached. The focus knob works well, but I found that the knob turns a bit too easily such that if I'm not careful, I can bump the focus knob. There is only the main focus knob (no separate fine focus).
The front lens is threaded for an 82mm filter, which I used to view the 2017 solar eclipse using a solar filter. I may also use a "daylight" filter to protect the front optic.
The scope is fairly well balanced and will rest on a flat surface using the tripod mount; this can be helpful when laying on the ground and shooting rifle.
I debated about the angled / straight scope format and decided on this. It works well except when viewing at an extreme upward (say an eclipse or the moon) or downward angle, although the scope body can rotate in a ring that connects to the tripod mounting point.
Pros:
- Clear image
- Good quality manufacturing
- Sturdy tripod mount
- Quality controls and focus
Best Used for:
- Light astronomy
- Target aquisition for long-range shooting
- Spotting for target

I chose the PF-80ED for a new spotter scope as it had a combination of good power, an angled body, and a good price for the quality. I primarily use it to spot targets at the rifle range out to 300 yards, and having an angled body makes it easier for me to view. While it is very clear and easy to focus, on a sunny day the view can still suffer from mirage beyond 200 yards, so I have to dial down the power. As an 80mm scope it is large, and it is relatively heavy, but I got this for the range so the weight isn't a problem. I have been using it for two years now and am very happy with it.

We typically shoot competition at our local club with .22lr out to 100 yards. The need for a good quality scope is critical in distinguishing shot location on a NRA black target from 25 to 100 yards. I paired this with the Pentax 20x-60x zoom eyepiece. This combination offers excellent clarity and contrast with fantastic light transmission. I recently tested this at a midnight shoot where there is minimal lighting and was able to clearly distinguish my shot location, despite the black target background. This is a heavy scope and as such will require a sturdy tripod. This scope successfully competes with other units that are 2-3x it's price.
Pros:
- value
- eye relief
- light transmission
- Optical Performance
Best Used for:
- spotting scope
- long range shooting
- Birdwatching
