MOSOSODBOB's Review of Plano Double Gun Case w/ Heavy Duty Latches

Will not properly fit scoped AR style rifles.

I purchased this case in preparation for a varmint hunting trip to Montana. I am driving and will not need the robust protection of my Pelican cases, nor the excess weight and bulk. I thought this would be a lighter weight and more compact option. After receiving it, dry fitting my guns, I decided to leave it home and use my old Brownells shipping/storage cases instead.

My measurements and studies of the photos failed to account for the design of this case. I also failed to heed the review of another reviewer about the molded pillars being in the way. I purchased the case to be used for an AR15 varmint (24" bbl) rifle and a Savage Mod 10 rifle. Both are equipped with scopes that have target turrets adjustment knobs and sunshades. They are taller and longer than most "hunting rifle" scopes. My rifles barely fit into the case. There were no wiggle room (space with foam) at all. The case is long enough, but, the bottom of the rifle grips and the top of my scope turrets will touch the side of the case with no foam protection.

The most disappointing thing about this case is the fact that they actually have less crush protection than my Brownells or Creedmore Sports padded soft cases. The portion with the pillar and the edge of the case (when closed) would withstand some light impact (crushing) force. However, the center or the middle portion (next to the handle, where my scope would be located) would give and I suspect it will not protect my scope or anything located in that area. Something heavy like an ammo can filled with ammo falling on that portion will likely damage anything there.

Because of the thin design of the foam and lack of rigidity of the case, I would recommend the user of this semi-rigid case as if using a soft case. Don't put heavy stuff on it. For me, this case will be used only for car rides to the shooting range and back. It will not afford me the needed protection for airline transport or rugged off-road travel.

Too bad I can't post photos to show the fit of my guns in this case.
Pros:
  • Compact and Light
  • cheap cost
  • holds two rifles
Cons:
  • None
Would Recommend: No
