Shlem's Review of Police Surplus Russian Police Riot Helmet

The helmet is excellent and was in new condition. Unlike many surplus helmets it's in a useable size---the chinstrap is plenty roomy and has a nice quick release feature. I'm not sure if it's a pro or a con, but as you can see in the picture, the face shield is not as long as some. The pro aspect may be that it's less prone to fogging up and slightly easier to breathe, the con would be it doesn't really protect the upper throat at all. It came with a carrying bag, instructions for assembly, and a Russian-language manual. My helmet arrived assembled, however. According to the manual, and my Russian is very poor but I can make out a few things, it's a KZ ShPU helmet made by a company named Zashita (Protection). It's said to weigh 1.35 kg. The helmets come in three sizes of head circumference: 1- 58 cm, 2- 60cm, 3- 62 cm. The documentation with my helmet said it was size 2, manufactured June 2012. It fits Russian GOST R standard 50744, which is a kind of standard for weapons and armor, although I can't tell you what that standard is. It says it's suitable for temperatures from -30 C to 30 C (-22 F to 86 F).
