DrRJP's Review of ProMag Ruger 10/22, Charger .22 LR, Rifle Magazine

I'm recommending this product but with a caveat: reliability is a hit-or-miss proposition and you may get a lemon on your first go around. However, rather than throw in the towel, I would suggest trying another one in its place, because if that one works, then you'll have a mag that's a great, low-cost option to the Ruger BX-25 (often out-of-stock) that holds more than 25 rounds and one that also comes with a lifetime warranty.

I bought two of these after reading positive reviews elsewhere. Like some of the other complaints mentioned here, one of them had loading issues (hard to load after round 20, wouldn't load past 30 rounds and the follower got stuck when trying to unload it). I returned that one but was determined to make the remaining one work.

I got a MagLula loader and unloader for 10/22-style mags (really urge users to buy at least a loader if you want to save your thumbs because the spring in these gets progressively tighter and harder to load). Using the MagLula loader, I was able to fill this mag with 32 rounds of Federal Target ammo (standard velocity, lead round nose). I let it sit for two weeks before taking it out to the range.

I have one of the new Winchester Wildcat .22lR rifles that takes 10/22 mags. I first loaded up the 10-round rotary mag with this ammo to test the rifle. It worked great. I then tried the Pro-Mag magazine and only the 2nd round out of the first four rounds actually fired. The other three rounds only partially loaded in the chamber. But, rounds 5 through 32 fired just fine. Using a hypodermic-style applicator, I put a few drops of high quality gun oil into the magazine on the coiled spring, on the sides of the follower and also on the inside of the mag walls. I then reloaded the mag, but this time I put in 32 rounds of CCI Mini-Mags (copper-plated HPs) - which have never failed to work in any .22LR firearm I've ever owned.

All 32 rounds fired flawlessly. I then reloaded it with 32 rounds of CCI Velocitors - which are hyper-velocity rounds and pack a pretty good punch. These also functioned flawlessly and, in fact, the rifle liked them better than any of the previous rounds I tried.

Bottom line: if you're willing to follow at least some of the steps that I took (getting a loader is a necessity), then I do highly recommend them for the reasons state above.

  • lifetime warranty
  • capacity
Cons:
  • Hard to load
  • A loader is needed to fill the mag
  • Has feeding issues
Best Used for:
  • Varmint Hunting
