1022guy's Review of ProMag Archangel Quick Break-Down Stock for Standard Ruger 10/22 Rifles

This stock arrived Jan 2021. It went together quite easily. Make sure you watch the Promag video on installation before you do anything. I had a little difficulty getting my barrel out of the rifle the first time I tried to remove the barrel prior to installation. I watched the video and it gave a good tip about using a hair dryer or a heat gun on the receiver and another tip on rocking the barrel out. It took an extra 10 minutes to find Wifey's hair dryer and heat up the receiver, but it came out fairly quickly after applying the two manufacturer's tips. Once I had the barrel out installation into the new stock only took a few minutes. The included instructions were easy to follow and not at all complicated.

The stock is almost everything that Promag says it is with one exception. The storage area under the butt plate. You are required to press two tabs inward to get it open. The tabs are so stiff that I could not get them to open the butt plate. I was frustrated for about 20 minutes trying to open the butt plate until I figured out how to use a small C-clamp and a 1/4 inch nut on the opposite side to press the tabs in and finally open the butt plate. It wasn't worth the effort and frustration. Their advertisement shows a couple of ear plugs and some fish hooks going into the storage area and I agree that they will fit, so I guess that is truth in advertising. I had planned to put a 22 caliber bore snake in it but I could not cram it in, as it would not fit. You might be able to get 15-20 rounds and a pair of earplugs in, but if you are like me, you may have a heck of a time getting it open.

Over all, though, the stock is great. Installation is pretty quick and simple. The barrel locks up tight when installed into the receiver. The stock folds and stays folded until you want to unfold it. The barrel fits securely into the rifle butt as expected. (You don't need to open the butt plate to insert the barrel as there is an opening in the butt plate for the barrel. It looks well made and the aluminum block molded in gives the stock a nice rigidity and solid feeling.

Other than the butt plate opening issue this would have been a 5 star review. I would have ignored the fact that the storage area was so small, but the fact that I couldn't get it open without a C-clamp costs Promag a star.

If I had another 10/22 I would buy this again and just recognize that the storage area is a good idea that just didn't work out for me.
