Rich's Review of Pulsar Trail XP50 1.6-12.8x42mm Thermal Imaging Rifle Scope

The Trail XP50 is as advertised. It opens up a whole new world in night hunting and works well during the day too. I have had success on coyotes out to 300 yards, but could identify them further, (it's just that the conditions for a shot wasn't there). Before my purchase, I had concerns with the clarity, but that was not an issue. Understand that thermals are not light-enhancing NV devices and clarity suffers as distance gets greater. However, fog, snow and rain do NOT effect this scope, as opposed to Standard NV scopes. Check out the videos posted on line and see how clear they look. Just understand that the videos are probably 15% less clear then what you'll see in your scope live. My only complaint would be sighting-in. It was easy, but not as precise as with a standard scope, (or even a light-enhancing, night vision scope). I'm use to sub-minute groups at 100 yards and was guessing on a few shots with this scope. It works on heat, so I first used aluminum tape, in the shape of a cross. The aluminum shows up colder then the paper. To adjust the cross hairs to where I was hitting, I stapled a sandwich bag with ice cubes in it. I'm still not real confident, so if anyone has any precision pointers on fine tuning the sighting, let me know. The sight mount is very stable. Just remember that on standard scope rails, you may run out of space as you try to get the scope closer to you, attempting to reduce eye relief distance. I use 4 of the 5 mounting screws to get an extra half inch closer. The controls are simple and easy to adjust. I'm not tech savvy and I feel really comfortable with them. The picture-in-a-picture feature is essential and works great. I have not use the interface streaming stuff because, where I live their is almost no band width and download and live feeds take an eternity to stream. Again, I'm not tech savvy. Do your research before buying something this expensive and I think you'll agree, the Pulsar Trail XP50 is the right choice if coyotes, bobcats and fox sized critters are your target varmints. For hogs, you could probably get away with cheaper thermals. For the quality, the price is right.
Pros:
  • power, clarity, ease of use, picture-in-a-picture sighting, battery life
Cons:
  • sighting, shooting rail mounts
Best Used for:
  • Hunting, recreational game spotting
