Most Helpful Negative Review Retaining Clip Broke First Time Out - Poor quality but what other options are there?
The retaining clip broke after reloading several times the first time to the range. This is an expensive piece of plastic with what obviously is a clip that is highly susceptible to breaking based on what I've now read about online. Sadly, there are no other options that I know of for the Ruger American. I am very disappointed that OpticsPlanet did nothing but tell me to contact the manufacturer.

20 rounds and stopped feeding

by CrapShoot, from FL, United States Written on December 27, 2024
The Ruger American .243 Win is harder to sind ammo and I wish I went for .308. Put 20 rounds through it at the range and the cartridge stopped feeding. What a drag to own this.

Don’t buy Ruger American

by Mic of Ga., from GA, United States Written on November 12, 2022
I currently own a Ruger American in .308. While new the mag. release broke in half. I notified Ruger, and complained of the lack of quality in the mag.. They replaced the mag. with the same o e m. Don’t trust these mags. Keep duck tape nearby, because they will fail. I currently own five Ruger products since the seventies: a cheap mag. makes the entire gun cheap⚠️
Pros:
  • Cheap
  • None. Item is defective
Cons:
  • Out of character for Ruger

Cheap Plastic Garbage

by Mike, from PA, United States Written on September 13, 2021
The retaining clip also broke on mine the 1st time I ever had the rifle out while siting in my scope ‍♂️ Soo Disappointing. Actually secured it with black electrical tape and load it manually through the breach now which blows my mind A few more bucks would have produced a reliable product And it also blows my mind there isn't a good aftermarket version out there
Pros:
  • None
Cons:
  • Cheap plastic that will break
Best Used for:
  • Garbage can

Purchaser of 2 ruger american rifles

by Ronniew, from IN, United States Written on October 11, 2020
Clip broke first time out !!! I believe ruger should go back to metal clips and magazines . No one should have to pay $29.99 for a replacement clip made of plastic that break using them in the first round out !

The mag that came with the gun

by Gojk, Verified Owner from AZ, United States Written on October 7, 2018
This is the magazine that comes with the Ruger American Predator so expect the same. If you like the stock mag you will like this one. It is plastic and feels somewhat flimsy, but I have used them for a while without any issue.

Needed a New Mag for my .308

by Rob, from CA, United States Written on March 21, 2018
This is exactly what the doctor prescribed. Shame my old mag gave out, but this did the trick. The inner spring that exerts pressure on your rounds started to loosen up so it wasn't feeding properly. I would advise grabbing two of these guys in case a future spring loosens up on you while out in the field.
