Most Helpful Positive Review Typical Safariland Quality
I started my journey like many other people... buying cheap holsters. As time goes on they get relegated to a bin or drawer. Safariland's ALS system is one of the best active retention systems out there. I'm not as much of a fan of the SLS hood [except on some guns that have an exposed hammer]. I would make the investment in the ALS NUB mod [just search for it]. The one con would be the optics hood feels cheap. I run it with a G17 w/ TLR-1HL with 2 different slides. Brownells slide w/ suppressor height sights and a Holosun 507c. Also a stock slide running Trijicon HD XR's.

Big and ugly.

by Steven Marshall, Verified Owner from NC, United States Written on July 22, 2025
I was so disappointed when this arrived. It did not lock on My M&P, 2.0 ,4.25-inch barrel An a Vortex Defender ST. I guess the good news is Optics Planet took it back 9good company). Part of me is glad because I would not like this as a carry holster. Its big, ugly and just looks like a grocery bag. I was just looking for a mid- or low-rise holster for my Smith and I just can't find one. OH Well
Pros:
  • None

  • Big Ugly

Best Holster for the M&P, Period.

by The Box of Plentiful Holsters, Verified Owner from TX, United States Written on June 24, 2025
I bought this 6390RDS for the M&P Carry Comp, a newer version M&P with no specific holster model listed, hoping it would fit. It does fit after some break in. The ALS module interferes with the slide cuts mildly, but it works fine after some holstering repetitions. I have carried Safariland holsters for many years, and this is the best quality duty holster I have used. It is more sturdy than the 7TS model and I believe it protects the gun better with the suede lining and tougher shell. It is slightly more bulky but well worth it. I have tried two other brands of duty holsters at the range and this appears to be the best quality out of all of them. I will be glad to try or purchase a new Safariland with a modified ALS module that works more smoothly with the Carry Comp, however for those wondering if this one for the M&P 2.0 standard will work, it will with break-in. This will likely be the holster model (6390RDS) that I will retire with. Note: The 6390RDS is a level one holster, and becomes level two with an ALS guard added on. I have found this to be the most effective and quick-deploying configuration for Safariland, far superior to the SLS hood. Particularly good if you can't carry level one. Safariland is the gold standard for a good reason. The Safariland customer service line could use a bit more experience and patience, however.
Pros:
  • Sturdy and Proven
Cons:
  • slightly bulky
Best Used for:
  • duty

Sig P320 X module not a great fit

by Erik, Verified Owner from NY, United States Written on June 18, 2024
The holster itself is very high quality and I’m sure would work well for most. But my specific setup left the fitment a bit off. My Sig p320 X-Full with TLR-1HL did not fit well for a few reasons. The wingnut screw on the light would rub on the edge of the holster, making for a spot for it to hang up going in and out of the holster. Secondly, it seemed the distance from the als to the bottom of the light was not quite enough. I had to holster in a very specific way in order for the light to even fit without it getting caught on the edge of the holster opening. Probably could have worked with modification, but I decided to return it. It may have been just my specific holster that I received, but decided to return it and not try another one. I’ve read others with fitment issues on the x grip module as well.

Works Well

by Bob Smith, Verified Owner from NH, United States Written on October 29, 2023
If you already own an ALS holster or have owned one in the past this product is yet another line in that series, though in the case of the one I bought it is now designed for Staccato/2011 style pistols. If you haven't used an ALS holster before, this is primarily a duty holster (likely legal in some competitions as well) that provides a level of active retention, that being a device that has to be manually disengaged/depressed before the pistol can be drawn. In the case of an ALS holster you depress a lever with your strong hand thumb as you draw. This version of the Safariland requires a light to be mounted to function properly and allows for a red dot to be mounted.

I have tried this with both a Staccato C2 with a Holosun EPS red dot mounted and a Springfield Armory Prodigy 4.25" with no red dot. I have tried both with two different weapon lights, a Streamlight TLR-1 HL and a Surefire X300 Turbo. The holster locks securely onto the pistols with both lights and draws smoothly. The draw was very smooth right out of the box/bag. I am not using the belt attachment, rather I have the pistol mounted to an ALS locking fork that attaches to the correct connection on my belt. That the holster seems to work with both a Staccato and a Prodigy is nice in that my guess is you can use it for those style pistols without needing to purchase something different for each brand.

Safariland 6390 RDS ALS Mid-Ride Level 1

by gretas guns operaror, Verified Owner from CA, United States Written on May 14, 2021
I recently purchased a Sig P320 X Compact & was looking for a reliable duty holster. I own several Safariland ALS holsters for my Glocks, but none for the Sig platform. Needless to say I purchased this holster from Optics & it was at my front door in less than a week. I’m running a Delta Point Pro 1 red dot & a Surefire X300U-A. The gun fits into the 6390 like a glove. I highly recommend this holster for the Sig P 320 X Compact.

Solid piece of gear

by LawnDart11c, from NY, United States Written on April 27, 2021
I got this product only knowing the name and thus far im extremely satisfied with the product. Having my sidearm secured while moving around adds another level to the training I can do allowing myself to shoot and move to alternative fringing positions with out having to worry about my pistol flying out and landing possibly damaging my pistol or even worse discharging. But with my holster i know my gear is safe and secure.

Great Holster

by IPACA9, Verified Owner from MO, United States Written on April 13, 2021
A buddy recommended to order this holster for my Shadow Systems War Poet and Surelight x300v light. I originally had a Blackhawk Serpa holster and didn't feel safe using it. This one works great for the range.
