Chris's Review of Scalarworks LEAP/Scope Mount

While expensive, the scalarforce LEAP was everything I could want for mounting a Nightforce Nx8 1-8 on my rifle- lightweight, quick detach, and bombproof. Although the price did make me wince, I decided I was willing to pay for the best and was also happy to support a US company in the process. Because both the scope and mount were a significant purchase for me, I followed the instructions EXACTLY when assembling everything and used a torque wrench to turn every screw to the proper torque spec. This setup was mounted to a 5.56 AR and after zeroing, I fired <100 rds through this rifle from a bench on a flat range. On every occasion the rifle was fired, it was always transported in a padded case and when not in use, it was stored in my gun safe in a climate controlled location. 5 months since my initial purchase and I took this out of the safe and see the top of the rear scope ring has what looks like a scratch in the anodized finish. Upon closer inspection I see it’s a crack in the aluminum where the ring was drilled for the hinge pin. This rifle was never dropped and as far as I am aware, the crack was not there when I put the rifle away so I am assuming this happened just while sitting in the safe. When I unscrewed the rear ring, I discovered the crack went completely through the ring and it had broken into 2 pieces. It seems to be a failure of the aluminum at the point where it was drilled for the pin as it’s a clean crack through the ring. I would like this mount to work for me as I think it’s very well designed but given that it broke from just sitting in a safe without any real use on it, how can I really depend on it? I paid $400 because I wanted a scope mount that would last a lifetime and I could depend on but after this experience I would not recommend others purchase this mount if it’s going to be used on a tool you intend to use for serious applications. I would like to mention that I do have several other Scalarworks mounts for red dot sights that work great, it just seems there is some issue with the design/ materials used in this mount in particular that caused it to fail with hardly any use.
Pros:
  • Lightweight
  • well designed
Cons:
  • Not durable
Would Recommend: No
