Poppgunn's Review of Schrade SCHF36M Fixed Blade Knife, 5.05in

I'm actually surprised no one has reviewed this knife. It's a 5+ inch long blade of high carbon stainless steel, similar in hardness to AUS-8 and is powder coated. It's a full quarter inch thick and weighs close to a pound. Blade is full tang with a finger choil and has jimping for the thumb on the upper spine and on the underside of the grip. While the jimping is aggressive, I didn't find it painful. My blade has a perfect hollow grind. Sheath is a black cordura nylon with a kydex liner insert and a nylon retainer with a snap. It has an external velcro pouch that contains a diamond sharpening stone and a decent sized ferro rod with striker. My knife came sharp enough to cut notebook paper and shave the hair on my arm. I imagine when I strop it, it will be scary sharp. Is it as refined as some of the Spanish or Italian knives? No, but it also doesn't cost like them either. If I compare it to say, the Selkirk, which would be a close competitor, I'd say this micarta handle is a lot more comfortable in the hand. The only drawbacks I notice are it's weight and I'd have preferred a sabre grind over the hollow grind for its intended use, but there's certainly nothing wrong with it. If you're on a budget and you are looking for decent knife you wouldn't have to worry about, this is it. Overall, a great bargain.
Pros:
  • It's built like a tank. Very sharp. Has some nice add ons
Cons:
  • Weight.
Best Used for:
  • Camping, hunting, heavy bushcraft
