Dreamhawk's Review of Sharps Bros. Badlands Integrated Muzzle Brake & Blast Deflector

First thing I would like to say is that if you are looking for a flash suppressor, this is not the product for you. That being said however, for what this product is intended, it's incredible! The Badlands is intended for suppressing recoil and aiming the muzzle blast downrange where it should go. Straight out of the box, I was impressed that the Badlands is incredible in that it's a single piece! Something like the Badlands couldn't possibly have been machined. So I checked further and found that it's actually printed! Yes! A single printed piece of steel! I guess they can print just about anything these days! It's hefty too, weighing in at just under a half pound! Putting it on the rifle was a piece of cake. Just make sure you order the correct threads for your intended rifle(s). Just take off your current flash suppressor, muzzle brake, or thread guard, put a tiny bit of thread lock on the threads, and screw it on. Shooting with the Badlands on, I found that it does suppress recoil, and throws most of the concussive blast downrange just as advertised. If someone stands directly lateral to the barrel (which they have no business there unless they are your support in a gunfight), they will feel a bit of the blast, but very little as compared to not having the Badlands installed. The muzzle noise is also impressively directed downrange. One surprise to me, was that when shooting with the Badlands attached in reduced light, the muzzle flash was very bright, but the largest part of it appears about 10 or 15 feet in front of the muzzle! You can really tell how much of the powder charge is burned after the bullet has left the barrel by how bright the flash is and how far in front of the muzzle the flash appears. This might assist reloaders in calculating powder charges in what length of barrel, since any powder burning out front of the muzzle is essentially wasted powder because the bullet is already in flight. Also, when I fired the rifle from a prone position, the amount of dust created from muzzle blast is impressively reduced when using the Badlands. As I said at the beginning of this review, this is not a flash suppressor by no means, but it's also not advertised as a flash suppressor. For it's intended use (in my case teaching my wife to shoot the rifles) I highly recommend the Badlands for decreasing recoil, and directing muzzle blast and noise downrange. The weight of the Badlands kind of makes it necessary to use a bipod or a rest of some sort, but she would have to utilize one of those anyway. I think it's a great product!
Pros:
  • Muzzle blast and considerable noise directed downrange. Recoil suppression
Cons:
  • Weight - weighs nearly a half pound. May not be a con for experienced shooters
Best Used for:
  • Rifles - .556, .308, .30 caliber rifles
Would Recommend: Yes
