Low Cost Doesn't Have to Mean Low Quality

by Jeremy L., Gear Expert from IL, United States Written on November 4, 2015
When talking about the endless options for night time optics, you'd expect prices north of 1k for anything even remotely useful. Well boys and girls, Sightmark has officially done what no one else has yet to do successfully.

Now there are two different versions of this unit one with a higher magnification 6x or the 4x one which I've been fortunate enough to have for quite some time. Throughout my testing and evaluation of the Photon XT, I've grown extremely fond of several features that set this scope apart from anything else remotely in its price range.

Since this is a digital night vision device, I find that its a lot easier on my eye when glassing for extended periods of time. While the same can be said for other digital NODS, this one in particular is not plagued by slow startup times which can be a huge pain when you need your optic on and functioning quickly.

Another key feature I like about the Photon XT is it's varied IR illuminator. Not only can you turn the IR completely off but you're given the option of three different infared intensities. I've found when the illuminator is cranked up to the highest level to be effective on larger game/ bigger targets out to 150/175 yards. If you're looking at taking longer shots than that, you might want to consider a higher up night vision/thermal device.

Personally I'm still surprised at the huge selection of reticle options and colors the Photon XT has and have actually used multiple reticles for varied scenarios but almos...

Most Helpful Positive Review Sightmark Photon XT 4.6x42 Digital NV
Shipping was fast, once the item was back in stock. Overall I would say this scope rivals those 3x its cost. The clarity is great. Note: The range is limited with the on board IR, but I borrowed a buddies 850 nm torch and could see clearly enough to identify and distinguish targets well past 150 ya...

Most Helpful Negative Review Not a bad scope but don't expect super quality. It's also nearly worthless without an IR illuminator
I was looking for a reasonably priced NV scope to hunt wild pigs. The Photon seemed to fit the bill. I bought this scope about a week ago and had no chance to mount it on my rifle. I've played with it outside at night and during daytime. Overall quality is ok considering that good night vision scop...

Sightmark Photon XT 4.6x24S

by Dakota Sparks, Verified Owner from LA, United States Written on November 21, 2017
If you’re looking to shoot at night but not drop a ton of money on high-end night vision or thermal, then this is your best best. Easy to zero with a lot of internal adjustment, and holds a zero very well. Installed on a SCAR 17S with a Burris PEPR mount and it’s been rock solid. You will need an auxiliary IR illuminator to extend your range our past 100 yards or so, but so far, not a single problem out of the device. Very pleased with this purchase!
Pros:
  • Affordable
  • Holds zero
  • User-friendly
Cons:
  • Needs auxiliary IR past 100 yards

Great All Around!

by mc101shooter, from WI, United States Written on November 8, 2017
Just mounted this on my rifle today and sundown could not come soon enough! The daylight function is good and you can definitely use it during that time. At night the scope works well for those who don't want to shell out the thousands of dollars for high end night vision optics. I am easily able to see and engage targets out to 150 yards and further! The extra illuminator is not crucial because the IR illuminator built into this optic is plenty bright but the added value is a plus. If you are thinking about buying this item for application to 200 yards or in, just do it! It will serve it's purpose quite well. When setting up the optic I thought it was broken because it would not focus on anything past 10 yards, that is until I found out that there are two dials on this scope to adjust the focus. Once I found that I was ready for the night. Remember that this is a 30mm tube so make sure you get the correct rings for this optic.

100 yard night scope

by SemperFido, from FL, United States Written on July 24, 2017
It is exactly what I was expecting. A decent 100 yard night scope. It is better than the old starlight scopes we used in the Marines back in the 70's. I have never used a gen 4 so I cannot compare it to one of them. And it only uses two AA batteries.
Pros:
  • price, capabilities
Cons:
  • None
Best Used for:
  • Kill the hog

Easy to use

by Ted, from GA, United States Written on January 26, 2017
I looked at the ATN and this scope. We are thumping hogs on our deer property and I did not want to spend a thousand or more dollars to shoot hogs a few times a year. I used night vision in the military, to include at very high speed (jet) and am familiar with good and not so good optics. This is a great scope. I think it is clearer than the ATN, and quite a bit lighter. I am also a non techy guy. I don't need all the aps and buttons on the ATN. On this scope, you push one button, and it is "on". Push the same button again and it increases the IR if you need it. Push one button, shoot hog, hold button down and scope goes "off". That is
all I need it to do. And it does. I'm about to get another one.

Great night vision for the money

by Duckmd, from IL, United States Written on January 8, 2017
Set this scope up on my 300 blackout for coyote hunting. The factory illuminated works well on nights with some moonlight on dark nights a after market illuminator is very helpful for seeing past 100 yards. Took out tonight on fresh snow didn't evem need illuminator to see at 50 yards.

Photon XT 4.6

by Bp44, from OR, United States Written on December 6, 2016
This scope is an amazing value. I have shot it next to a Gen2+ NV scope and not only does it hold its own, I feel that it beats it! The scope is digital and requires that a IR illuminator be used for night shooting. The built in illuminator works great for viewing out to 130-150UDS. An additional IR illuminator will stretch the effective range substantially and increase the scopes battery life. While the night vision works the day mode is pretty "grainy" you can see well enough to shoot but it leaves a lot to be desired. It is still very much usable during daylight hours. It is a very affordable NV option that is a hoot to shoot.

  • Affordable
Cons:
  • None

Photon XT 4.6 x42S

by Ryan, Verified Owner from IL, United States Written on November 10, 2016
I have a couple complaints:
1)Zeroing was quite difficult. It doesn't show my reticle and the additional zeroing cross hair. It is supposed to, but I wasn't able to get it to do that.

2) Visibility during daylight is very poor. I have the ATN X sight and it is in color. I would like to have the photon use color during the daytime as well.

the image is crisp, not as distorted as the ATN X sight, and it is much lighter.
