High Value Spotting Scope for Digiscoping or Hunting

Written on Dec 30, 2015

Quite possibly one of the highest value spotting scopes on the market at the time I'm writing this review. Upon pulling it out of the box, I immediately noticed that the construction and fit and finish are that of meticulous craftsmanship. The tough rubber housing literally has zero imperfections and trust me I looked over every square inch of it.

All of the adjustments for the sunshade, focus ring and magnification are stupidly smooth and precise. After messing around with the spotting scope I already knew what I was in store for when bringing it out to the field.

I set this Celestron Regal LER up overlooking a wide open field around 3pm and quickly had a feel for the focus and was able to easily spot and zoom in on random birds that made their way into my view. While this is not "THE BEST GLASS EVER" it really is extremely pleasing to the eye and from what I can tell theres no distortion or chromatic aberration.

I'm looking forward to busting out my digiscoping camera adapter and showing off what I think will be some excellent shots.

All in all its an excellent choice for anyone with a budget between $600-$800 range that doesn't mind lugging around a little extra weight....

Well thought out, lightweight pants

Written on Nov 25, 2015

I've been wearing these 24/7 Ascent pants on a regular basis for a little less than a year now and have had nothing but good things to say about them. They've been worn for everything from 3Gun matches to hikes and the unique features, as well as the construction of the pant itself have been pushed to what I'd consider to be the ultimate test.

There's really only one negative thing I can say and I'll get that out of the way right now, sizing. The sizes run a little bigger than I'm used to. For me, I normally wear a size 32 waist and after ordering the 32's in these pants they're a little to big for my liking. After dropping down to a size 30, they fit like a glove. WORD OF ADVICE!!! Order one waist size smaller.

Ok now on to what I like about the pants.

Color. I have these in the coyote colorway and have to say it goes extremely well with most of the colored tshirts or jackets I own. To me its the perfect hue and I have to give Tru-spec some credit for getting it right.

Construction. Built from a 65% polyester and 35% cotton rip stop, they're not only tough enough to withstand crawling around through brush or scraping hard surfaces but they also have a generous amount of stretch to the material to allow an huge range of motion.

Finish. The water repelling finish/treatment on them keeps stains away and also leaves your legs dry under light rain/snow.

Pocket Layout. I don't know about you but Im not a fan of pants with a million pockets with no real though put into their

High end glass at a low price

Written on Nov 23, 2015

This might just be the highest value spotting scope on the market at the time I'm writing this review. Upon pulling it out of the box, you'll notice it's wrapped in an extremely well thought out padded case. After zippering the case open is when you really get excited. The construction and fit and finish are that of meticulous craftsmanship. The tough rubber housing literally has zero imperfections and trust me I looked over every square inch of it.

All of the adjustments for the sunshade, focus ring and magnification are stupidly smooth and precise. After messing around with the spotting scope I already knew what I was in store for when bringing it out to the field.

I set this Meopro HD 80 up overlooking a wide open field around 3pm and quickly had a feel for the focus and was able to easily spot and zoom in on random birds that made their way into my view. While this is not "THE BEST GLASS EVER" it really is extremely pleasing to the eye and from what I can tell theres no distortion or chromatic aberration.

One thing that I was really fond of was using this spotting scope in conjunction with Meopta's Iphone 57mm Meopix Iscoping adapter, which allows you to take some pretty impressive quality photos as distance.

All in all its an excellent choice for anyone with a budget between $1,200-$1,600 that doesn't mind lugging around a little extra weight.

Doesn't get much better than this.....

Written on Nov 16, 2015

New for 2015, the Meopro HD 10X42 binos that I've spent a few months reviewing have all the bells and whistles at a pretty surprisingly "lower" cost.

Disclaimer* I have not used these hunting yet. I know many of you will be purchasing these with the intention of using them to hunt but I haven't had the opportunity to take them hunting yet so can't give you the run down of how they've held up while doing so.

With that out of the way, I have however used them for a long list of uses like calling hits on steel targets 400 yards, some nature sight seeing, and even some digiscoping their 44mm iphone adapter. Pretty much everything you'd ever use bino's for except glass game that I was ready to shoot.

Through all of this testing, there's been a few things that have stuck out to me as usable features that for me justify the $900 street price. I'm not going to bore you by riddling off specifications or a bunch of optical terminology.

What "I" Like About Them:
-The Housing. Their built with a quality that reminds me of a well built high-end watch. On top of that they also do an extremely well job of staying grippy even when my hands get abnormally sweaty. Yes a lot of bino manufacturers do this BUT on these they're not overly grippy where they get hung up on your clothes or pack when moving.

-Clarity. It's second to none out of optics in this price range.

-Light Transmission. At 99.7 its also some of the highest in its price range as well. I can personally attest to this after

Sub $100 Laser Sight and Easy to Use? TAKE MY MONEY!!!

Written on Nov 05, 2015

It's been exactly three months since I got one of the first production models of this Spartan red laser sight from LaserMax. While I consider myself lucky to get one of the first ones, I've been dead set on finding all of the weaknesses of it and regrettably have not found anything worth scoffing at.

Usually when you put the words quality and laser sight together what you're left with is a sight that comes in north of the $150 mark. Somehow the ultra smart designers at LaserMax managed to wip up a light weight laser sight at an MSRP of $99.

I know what you're thinking "Well it's got to be a total hunk of junk for that price." Nine times out of ten you'd be right but the Spartan defies that mentality. Like I said earlier, due to the fact that its made of what looks like a high density plastic/polymer I thought breaking it would be easily accomplished with how I test gear. A combination of drops and whacks while attached to a Beretta blue gun left the sight showing minor wear marks but the sight stayed attached and maintained zero unconditionally.

If that abuse hasn't sold you on the featherweight laser sight, there's a few things that I REALLY like about it and they are as follows:

WEIGHT. You know the saying, ounce equal pounds, pounds equal pain? Well the Spartan might just be the lightest accessory you could conceivably attach to any pic rail, rail covers excluded.

The Activation Switches. Not simply slapped onto the unit, the on switch for this laser is exactly in the

Long Range Shooting Necessity

Written on Nov 05, 2015

Let's get this out of the way right away, yes this is expensive for a spotting scope. If you're a one tag a year hunter then there are a ton of options half the price of this Leupold spotting scope that would probably suit your needs better.

With that being said, if you're the type of sportsmen that is traveling thousands of miles for the perfect bull elk and spending a considerable amount of time just to take one or two long distance shots, it'd be very difficult to find a better spotting scope than this particular 12-40x60 HD Golden Ring from Leupold.

Why???

For starters, it comes in a sweet custom case with everything from a tripod, soft cover, strap, window mount, and even a camera mount for all you digiscopers out there.

Clarity. This is the most important selling point for me on majority of optics especially with binos or spotting scopes. Not to sound cliché but in true Leupold fashion the edge to edge clarity is second to none in spotting scopes in this price range which is extremely important when glassing a herd of game where you want to have the best view of every elk/tom/mountain goat in your field of view.

Along with the crystal clear clarity of this spotting scope, the 60mm objective has excellent light transmission for those times more often than not where daylight isn't working in your favor.

The build quality of this specific Leupold scope and all of their "Golden Ring" line of optics is phenomenal. Every knob, mag ring, and eyepiece turns and moves with

Low Cost Doesn't Have to Mean Low Quality

Written on Nov 04, 2015

When talking about the endless options for night time optics, you'd expect prices north of 1k for anything even remotely useful. Well boys and girls, Sightmark has officially done what no one else has yet to do successfully.

Now there are two different versions of this unit one with a higher magnification 6x or the 4x one which I've been fortunate enough to have for quite some time. Throughout my testing and evaluation of the Photon XT, I've grown extremely fond of several features that set this scope apart from anything else remotely in its price range.

Since this is a digital night vision device, I find that its a lot easier on my eye when glassing for extended periods of time. While the same can be said for other digital NODS, this one in particular is not plagued by slow startup times which can be a huge pain when you need your optic on and functioning quickly.

Another key feature I like about the Photon XT is it's varied IR illuminator. Not only can you turn the IR completely off but you're given the option of three different infared intensities. I've found when the illuminator is cranked up to the highest level to be effective on larger game/ bigger targets out to 150/175 yards. If you're looking at taking longer shots than that, you might want to consider a higher up night vision/thermal device.

Personally I'm still surprised at the huge selection of reticle options and colors the Photon XT has and have actually used multiple reticles for varied scenarios but almos

All The Bells and Whistles Without The Crazy Price Tag

Written on Oct 29, 2015

Now that thermal monoculars and riflescopes are becoming more and more popular, the options available are getting even better. While I'm not 100% sure how long Pulsar has been in the thermal optics game, I can say without a doubt they know what they're doing with this Quantum HD19A model. As cliché' as it may sound, after using this exact unit on a hog hunt, it is an excellent bang for the buck.

It has a ton of features that you're looking for when using a thermal monocular as a means of spotting game. For starters, the lightweight glass filled nylon housing is surprisingly heavy duty and took several "oops" moments on my part without any sign of damage.

Things I like About The Pulsar Quantum HD19A:

-Great feature is the video out capability for filming your hunts.
-DC power in allows you to run the unit once AA battery power has drained. Perfect for glassing out of a car.
-Simple controls
-Quick shutter/lens cover twist function
-(2) 1/4in thread tripod adapters
-Runs on 4 AA's
-Side integral Picatinny rail for mounting IR lasers.
-Lower cost

One Size Fits Most

Written on Sep 16, 2015

Short of slapping on a $15 nylon universal holster, finding a kydex/polymer holster that fits a wide array of different firearms is dang near impossible-until now that is.

I was lucky enough to get one of the first models of this 578 GLS pro fit holster from Safariland and to be honest at first I was under impressed at the idea of it on paper. "Ok great, a holster that works with a bunch of different guns, why would I need that?"

Fast forward a few months later and my viewpoint has done a total 180. I can't tell you how many times this holster has come in handy. I carry a Glock 19 every day and have on occasion used this holster to do just that. The retention is perfect, not too tight, not too loose but even if it wasn't, there's an easy to access adjustment that you can tighten/loosen with the gun on your hip to dial in that retention to "mhmm just right" levels.

I think where this holster really shines is with someone that owns several handguns of roughly the same size and shape. This one holster will work with a wide range of common shape/size pistols like a Smith and Wesson SDVE 9. HK USP 9, Glock 19,23, HK VP9, and through my own trial and error my Beretta Full Size 92. Throw this holster on and it's up to you which pistol you feel like carrying that day or which gun you want on your side out in the woods or hunting.

Another great idea for this holster is to have one as a backup for when you take a friend shooting or if you're training students in case what they brin

The Future of Battle Sights

Written on Sep 02, 2015

Due to the changing landscape of modern warfare towards urban environments,it means that fighting technology of yesteryear must change as well. And while I still like piggybacking red dot sights on top of fixed power sights or utilizing offset iron sights with a variable power scope- the folks at Leupold have come up with something even better....

Leupold's D-EVO and LCO and red dot combo is the fastest way hands down to go from a target at distance to one up close. There simply isn't anything else on the market that is like this setup.

In case you didn't know, the D-EVO is a fixed 6 power optic that through some engineering wizardry, has the objective lens just offset of the exit pupil (where you look through it). This allows the user (hopefully you)to mount their LCO red dot sight directly in front of the D-EVO. What you're left with in you field of view with your rifle shouldered is your fixed 6x magnification on the bottom and your 1x red dot video in the top portion of your view.

To help you better draw a picture in your head, imagine looking at a circle slightly larger than a golf ball. Now draw a line horizontally across the middle of that circle. In each of those "quadrants" there's a different sight picture. In the top portion is an unmagnified 1 MOA red dot sight. On the bottom portion you have a fixed 6x magnification with Leupold's stellar CMR-W reticle with bullet holdovers out to 600ish.

While it may sound semi confusing, using this setup is plain and simple
