Andrew's Review of Sightmark Photon XT 4.6x42S Digital Night Vision Rifle Scope

I was looking for a reasonably priced NV scope to hunt wild pigs. The Photon seemed to fit the bill.
I bought this scope about a week ago and had no chance to mount it on my rifle. I've played with it outside at night and during daytime. Overall quality is ok considering that good night vision scopes cost a whole a lot more. The manufacturer claims it's water proof but I doubt it. The battery cover is plastic and does not fit tightly around the O-ring seal on the base. It may protect against light rain if the scope is held upright. It will let water in if submerged or held upside down or sideways in the rain. I will try to install a larger diameter O-ring to hopefully improve the seal.
The scope is worthless without an IR illuminator turned on. My old Gen 1 NV monocular does a much better job at night time without IR illuminator. The Photon can't see anything even when the area is illuminated by moonlight and lights from nearby houses.
The scope comes alive when I turn the illuminator on. It' like turning a powerful flashlight on. The illuminator works well up to about 100 Yards. It's not invisible and can be easily spotted from far away. I turned it on and walked about 100 yards away. I could see a bright red dot where the scope was. It may scare some game at night but I can't say for sure since I had a chance to try it yet. I'm thinking about adding an external IR illuminator that's invisible to a naked eye, probably something that works in the 850nm. wavelength. IR illuminator should be on the right side of the scope. It gets blocked by a hand when adjusting focus, unless you are left handed.
Overall picture quality is ok at daytime and at night (with IR illuminator ON). It's not high definition by any means. Don't expect it to perform as good as Gen 2 or Gen 3 NV scopes. I doubt it's nitrogen purged so lens fogging can be a problem. It's not waterproof like the manufacturer claims it to be. The battery holder looks and feels very cheap (all cheap plastic). I'm also a bit concerned about long term durability. I'm trying to decide whether to keep it or to send it back for a refund.
