Rene's Review of Sightmark Wolverine 1x23 CSR 4 MOA Red Dot Sight

This red dot optic seems to be a well made and reasonably priced product and uses a readily available AA type battery instead of scarcer/pricier camera batteries.

This sight is for the shooter engaging at closer ranges, as the 4 mil red dot is about 6" in diameter at 25 yards, just about the same size as a Beachwood Casey stick-on reactive target. At anything past that range the a 4 mil dot completely obscures the bull's eye. Not-So-Good for target shooting, but just what the doctor ordered for quick acquisition of a human form. That is NOT meant to be a knock on this optic, just a caveat regarding a large 4-mil dot. Target shooters beyond 25 yards will want to consider a 2 mil dot.

What might be considered a knock on this device is the manner that it is activated (turned-on). The unit has two rubberized buttons on the side, one for "on" and to increase dot's intensity, and the other to reduce intensity down to the "off" position. In practice, to use the sight you must pump the on/increased intensity button like a mad-man to get it to a brightness level you will need to actually see the red dot in normal daylight. For a sight that is designed for personal defense it takes too long to turn-on and get to a reasonable brightness. Not an issue for target shooting, but as a 4 mil unit it's not a "target" sight.

I have become spoiled by sights that have an "off" position between each brightness setting that allows the shooter to turn the optic off at the brightness level you expect to use when it's turned back on.

All-in-all a pretty nice unit for the price but as always "You Get What You Pay For".
Pros:
  • Price, sturdiness
Cons:
  • slow to activate in emergency
Best Used for:
  • in-home defense
