Matt S.'s Review of Silynx Clarus Pro Noise Cancelling Hearing Protection Headset
Electronic Hearing protection is almost a necessity for shooting these days.
Whether you are taking a training course and need to hear commands or just realize the benefits of keeping an ear on what's going on around you, blocking out all noise is not acceptable.
For a cost effective option, I use Surefire EP3 or EP4 plugs. I lend them out without concern and keep a pair in all my bags/vehicles because they don't cost much.
But they aren't perfect and they don't replace good electronic hearing protection. They definitely don't offer hearing enhancement. But I never liked the bulk/interference of electronic ear muffs and i balked at the cost of electronic ear plugs (not to mention they never seem to be a well vetted product).
So when I got my hands on the Clarus Pro, I was pretty excited.
Comfortable ear plugs that stay out of the way, control box that runs an AAA and simple to control, all packed in a watertight case. My prayers had been answered.
Overbuilt wire, rugged design, interchangeable foam tips, and a 3.5mm jack to hook up to phones (cord included).
I have taken them to indoor and outdoor ranges. Zero complaints. They work well.
Clip the control unit to the belt line, run the wire under the shirt, plug em into your ears, and forget they are there.
Indoors I use low or medium sound amplification most, super high is really only meant for outdoors.
No interference when running a rifle or shotgun like earmuffs tend to have.
I also wore these when riding my motorcycle. Linked up to my phone, I can listen to music or take calls while maintaining audio awareness of my surroundings. Plus since the control unit runs on AAA battery, it seemed to not drain my phone battery as much compared to if I was just using ear buds with my phone.
Same situation when I wore them at the gym. No slip or interference and my phone wasn't in desperate need of a charge. I never realized how useful it was to still have audio awareness at the gym. Usually I just block everyone out but one workout with these shows how that could be a dangerous mistake.
All in all I was in love with the Clarus Pro from the moment it hit my ears. If you jump up in price to the FX2 model, you go from an in line microphone to an in ear microphone which would really only benefit me when riding my motorcycle but still seems worth it.
This is the second piece of ear protection that I have used that has made it onto my recommend to all shooters list.
Try it, you won't regret it.
