J's Review of SiOnyx Opsin Digital 1x19mm Night Vision Ultra Monocular

Hopefully this review answers alot of questions for people on the fence about this. I was military for 5.5 years and ran mono and bino gogs and I was a night systems instructor.
Can you see at night? Yes you can, bottom line. The full color is honestly incredible, its like naked eye at dusk. There's also some cool features like black and white filter and zoom functions but i will say the zoom gets gross and grainy. It is weapon mountable but the external battery is the only source if power so i dont know who is willing to duct tape that battery pack to a rifle.
For the price, this thing is pretty killer. It feels sturdy, wears nice, not heavy at all, good mounting features and is really easy to use. The battery lasts forever and being able to snap pics and videos is also really cool. Im sure as time goes on the next few models will be even better and I'd say digital NV is the way of the future for sure.
To answer some of the questions i had before buying:
Yes; they can see IR very well. Fun to see that invisible laser again.
No; there is no internal battery. You have to use the pack
Yes; it comes with a dovetail arm
Yes; it works with glasses and has a huge focal adjustment range
Things to be desired; I wish it took a cr123 or something in just the tube so you can run this without the pack externally. The power hook up is solid but definitely can not be plugged in blind. Even with the lens pressed against your eyeball (dont do that) you still cant quite see the entire screen and all the data in the corners. The little "TV screen" inside is a rectangle but the diopter is a circle. No way to view all 4 corners. You are not seeing anything in a pitch black room even if theres a tiny bit of light coming from under the door. There has to be a semi-decent amount of ambient light to get a good picture. Phosphor tubes win here for sure. Where these beat phosphor gogs is with full color, clearer picture, and great focal adjustment.
In conclusion if you are new to the world of NV and feel overwhelmed by all the options there are for conventional tubes, this is probably your way to go and these will definitely out live any pvs system. If you're broke and just really want nods, then yea grab these for sure. If you plan on taking these to combat then maybe wait for the next generation or 2 to come out. I hope that covers everything. Also no ITAR paperwork is needed for these :) and dont forget to use a coupon!!!
Pros:
  • Affordable
  • IR capabilities
  • color NV
  • Infinite focal adjustment
  • no ITAR
Cons:
  • eye relief
  • LLL sub par
  • external battery required
Best Used for:
  • Range
  • urban scenarios
  • ambient light areas
