Jack Ace's Review of Smith & Wesson Officer Tactical Range Bag

Poorly thought out. There are all kinds of little pouches on this bag that do not seem to fit anything. There is even a removable bag on the inside that has movable dividers that have no possible use and I cannot fathom what the removable bag is for besides taking up all of the room in the large compartment. When I go shooting I place my shooting bag on the bench with the pistol muzzle facing down range, take out the pistol and ammunition then put the bag on the spectator bench where I pretty much don't look at it again until I pack up. I have never thought of taking out a removable bag and running around the range like an idiot with it. I normally go shooting with my wife but there is no separate place for her headphones. So mine are now relegated to bouncing around in the main compartment with ammunition, magazine loaders, plastic faced mallet, tools etc. In sixty two years since I started shooting, the only time I have ever carried a water bottle to the range was during the ten years I spent in the army and that was only because of the ten mile hikes back and forth between where I was and where I was going to. Now, I am fortunate enough to have a thing called an automobile which I park about ten yards behind my shooting position in which I can carry literally gallons of water, ice tea, or soda pop which I try not to drink because my 72 year old bladder would keep me from standing still long enough to make a shot. The bag has all kinds of straps (I think they are called "Mollie" straps) sewn all over it and I can't imagine why I would need to hang so much stuff to get snagged and ripped off all over my bag. If I were camping or hunting I might need a back pack with those kinds of straps but then I wouldn't be carrying what amounts to a nylon airline carry on bag. Smith and Wesson was also thoughtfully enough to include a bag with a mesh bottom for sifting out sand or dirt from picked up brass. Nice, but on the small side and I think that anyone who needed one of these bags would have already acquired a few of the size they actually needed.
All in all I think TAC Forces' large range bag is much more usable and around the same price.
Pros:
  • Quality construction and materials
Cons:
  • Too many small usless pouches and accesories.
Best Used for:
  • Airline carry on bag.
