Matthew Cosgrove's Review of AXIL TRACKR Electronic Earmuffs

I really wanted to give the AXIL Trackr Electronic Earmuffs a rating of 4.5 Stars but since that isn't an option, I had to scale down. First, a couple minor issues with the Earmuffs - there were no instructions that came in the box (but not too hard to figure out) and second, the Battery Compartment Cover is very sheer and I was worried about damaging the cover after installing the batteries. Now the Pros; the Earmuffs are fairly comfortable and I put them on with and without my Eye Protection and wore them for a couple hours - I knew I had them on but not too uncomfortable. They are a bit snug but that is required for the 25 dB NRR Rating. I haven't been to the range yet but ran some preliminary tests at home. When I put the Volume up high, everything is amplified including AC Exhaust, dryer, fans, dog walking across flooring, etc. Most of the time I left the Volume at a normal level so it was similar to the volume you would hear without headphones on. The next test I did was to slap the side of my leg and the volume was definitely muffled. I then went into the garage, picked up a cooler to about 3 feet, and dropped it with and without the Earmuffs on and what a difference; when I had the Earmuffs on, I could hear the impact but very subdued. What I'm most concerned about however is the sound when I'm at the indoor range with my 10mm handgun. The issue is that the gun produces somewhere around 163 db of sound using heavy/high velocity ammunition. Given the 25 dB NRR, I'm not sure this will be adequate to dampen the sound to a reasonable level but I'm going to give it a go. I'll probably do some shooting with my 9 mm and 40 cal first just to be on the safe side. There does seem to be some confusion regarding the 85 dB specification - keep in mind that the Earmuffs will try to dampen (electronically) any sound above 85 dB but they cannot dampen the 163 dB anyplace close to the 85 dB. Matter of fact, they will simply go into full compression once a gunshot is fired and thus the 25 NRR will be the limiting factor. I really purchased these Earmuffs for home Self Defense in case I need to reach for my 10 mm handgun (assuming time permits) - my goal would be to not blow-out my Eardrums and these should provide that level of protection in my best estimate using the Tactical loads that I plan to use for that purpose. Sound quality is fairly good - you do get some weird chirps/noises if you have them turned up close to maximum but that is to be expected. I can't comment on the battery life yet - wish they had implemented an auto-shutoff like some of the other Earmuffs but not a huge factor for me. Overall, I would give these a 4.5 Star rating and am eager to try these out at the range.
