Not for utility work, this knife is meant for slashing and tearing through any attacker you may encounter.
The Emerson opener makes deployment near instantaneous and while it works best with stiffer materials like jeans, I've gotten it to deploy when wearing basketball shorts.
Non reflective coating on the blade was a nice upgrade from the original.
Solid grip with the FRN handles whether standard or reverse grip.
This is a great blade design for self defense and probably would scare away most aggressors without physical contact...if they're smart that is. The belly of the blade, with it's serrated spyderco edge, has the characteristics of a saw and will cut through most hardwoods. The tip of the blade is like a chisel ground scalpel and easily as sharp as one too....it's scary sharp, the photos do not do it justice..now for the bad news....the blade was rubbing on both sides of the liner and made very minuet scratches on either side of the blade...which normally is not a big deal, but a $120 knife shou...

If you want a perfect self defense edc flipper blade, this is the one!! Spyderco quality is top notch and it shows in this edc blade! Fit and finish is top shelf and very durable! The serrations are the sharpest ive seen and experienced. Stays sharp, and the emerson QUick flip is flawless!

Probably one of the best self defense knives i had ever owned. Minus the fact losing mine it was top notch for what it offered and ease of use. The emerson feature was flawless and the blade was sharp as well held up to multiple uses. Grip handle was great!! Speed and functionality are also a plus. Never had a negative experience or complaint owning it.
Pros:
Ease of use, durable and sharp!!
Cons:
none for me
Best Used for:
cutting/self defense
Would recommend: Yes

I wanted a self defense knife for times when local laws prohibit concealed-carry firearms. I didn't want a 'stabbie' type. After much research I settled on the Matriarch 2. The thumb hole for deployment is a good size for my large-glove-sized hand. This is key since sometimes the type of pants I wear makes it hard to keep the knife clipped in just the right way to use the Emerson Opener to get it 100% open. So it is a light flick to open the last 20%. I have the matte black blade. At first I thought I would want to get the after-market signet ring but decided I didn't need it for deployment. Plus, it would then 'show' and notify others what i have in my pocket. The regular clip keeps it 'more secret'. I definitely recommend if you want a slash-defense knife. There are a couple videos on Youtube showing how to do side-step moves if someone lunges at you, while you aim for areas on their body to increase your chance for survival and getting away.
Pros:
light-weight
easy cutting
Cons:
None
Best Used for:
Self defense

I love the Civilian model, so I had high hopes for this blade. This is smaller, VERY light to carry daily, and looks MEAN. The Emerson Opener is ingenious, it simply WORKS.
Be very careful with this knife, as stated in the other reviews this is a blade for saving your life.
Do NOT practice with this knife. Get a plastic karambit trainer, you don't want to break the blades tip (or send yourself to the ER)
This will cut through bunched up jeans, canvas and leather and continue through to the bone. Once inside you can use the tip to twist and pop out tendons.
It is expensive, but still cheaper than the larger Civilian and almost as deadly.
The Civilian is a T-Rex, this is a Velocoraptor
Pros:
light
well made
Cons:
not an all purpose blade
Best Used for:
Self defense
