Skamandrius's Review of Steiner M536 Prism 5x36mm Rifle Scope

In the interests of full disclosure, I have to report I paid less than $500 for this optic. So my estimation of its value for money I think is going to be skewed compared to others' experience with this sight.

I'm going to start by saying that I am largely satisfied with this sight, but mostly because of the lower price I paid for it. It is, essentially, a slightly upgraded version of the Burris AR536 (of which Beretta Defense is also the parent company). It seems to be the same optical design as the AR536 albeit with German glass, prism, and assembly and a slightly more refined reticle (in my opinion). It also has a rubberized armor overlaid on the aluminum housing, which is a nice touch. I think you would struggle to discern any meaningful difference in optical quality between this and a much more expensive prism optic (the default comparison for whatever reason being the ACOG). The revised default mount is also very, very good.

However, there are some not-so-impressive features. The eye relief and exit pupil are both acceptably okay. The reticle design is a little ho-hum (but the illumination mechanism is excellent and daylight visible). But by far the biggest let down is the field of view. Its 19.2 feet at 100 yards. Compare that to an Elcan SpectorOS 4x (>40ft) or Sig Bravo (>50ft) or even ACOG (>30ft) and you'll realize how disappointingly restricted the through-the-scope view really is. Now I understand those are 4x scopes, and also twice the price of this one. But then these are the variables that one has to reconcile when making a personal decision as to what optic is right for them. Is this optic worth twice a budget prism optic? Is it worth half a high end optic? Are its other positive features enough to convince you to forego the better FOV of a high end prism optic? Or do you feel that the cost savings are not worth the compromise?

At the end of the day, I would rate this optic a 3.5 if I could. Does if offer value for money? For the price I paid I think it does. Would I recommend it at full retail of $600? I can't say that I would. Hope this helps.
