Jason Knoke's Review of Streamlight Contour Remote Switch for TLR Weapon Lights

I bought this product over a year ago for use with my full size M&P 45 with a Streamlight TLR1 HL. The first one that was sent to me had a faulty switch. I would carry it in my duty holster and test it out every so often and found that it would only work about 75% of the time. I emailed Streamlight, removed the remote switch and used the paddles on the TLR1 HL and forgot about the situation for about a year.

I recently found the remote switch in a box and decided to finally send it to Streamlight for servicing. I was a little annoyed that I had to pay for shipping, but oh well. Streamlight quickly sent me a new unit, which works flawlessly. I wear my handgun almost daily and have been to the range with it, and there have been no issues since the defective unit was replaced.

My only con, besides the defect, is that the button is right where my right middle finger sits, making it easy to inadvertently turn on the light. I found that in quick draw drills I would activate my light every time. The TLR 1 HL actually lit up the target during the day, which was not intended, but it did make hip shooting at close range little easier.

I also have the Crimson Trace Lightguard, which has a more dim and less concentrated beam and therefore not suited for some purposes (great for concealed carry, poor for duty gear), however, the button on it rests lower on the handle (still under my middle finger but more toward my ring finger). This makes it so that I am less likely to unintentionally activate the light.

Overall I give this remote switch with a TLR 1 or TLR 1 HL 4/5 stars.
Pros:
  • Easy to operate
  • Great customer support from Streamlight
Cons:
  • Button may be too easy to operate
  • Look out for defective units
  • TLR system is bulky for concealed carry
Best Used for:
  • Police or Security Officers
  • Open Carry (if you're into that sort of thing)
  • Night shooting beyond 10 yards
