Bought my first Remington 597 and soon realized that the trigger was a pretty heavy pull. Ordered this improvement kit and what a difference it made the trigger pull was absolutely cut in half while maintaining a clean break.

Best investment you can make to improve trigger action on Remington 597. Be sure to add a drop or two of oil on the pin that goes through the metal spacers and spring. I used RemOil. This really makes trigger function smooth. You will not need a "target hammer" from Volquartsen. This Tandemkross kit is more than enough. The Remington 597 is often seen in "big box" sporting stores like Cabelas, Bass Pro Shops, and others on sale at discount. Often equipped with a gray or green stock with no sling swivel studs. Sometimes as a "combo" equipped with an inexpensive scope. Sometimes just iron sights. A "basic".22 caliber rifle. Usually cheaper than the Ruger 10/22 rifle. The trigger function on the "basic" 597 definitely needs this Tandemkross kit. Makes a "bargain" rifle trigger into a seriously smooth trigger. If you feel it is smooth enough, you can consider more accessories to turn your Remington 597 into a "project" rifle. A 5 Star rating for this kit.
