BB's Review of Trijicon HD Night Sights for S&W M&P - Orange or Yellow Front

These are obviously well-made and quite sturdy. The sight picture in the dark is three distinct green glowing dots. But be sure you realize that you loose the 3-dot sight picture in daylight because the rear tritium vials are not highlighted with paint and are not easy to see against the black metal mount. This does draw your focus properly to the front sight which IS highlighted, in bright orange or yellow. In daylight you use the U-shaped notch of the rear sight to center the view of the front dot. Many people like this arrangement. I am more used to the traditional 3-dot sight picture such as the stock sights on the M&Ps give. I bought two sets of these HD sights, one for my full-size M&P 40 and one set for my Walther PPQ Navy SD. I decided to keep the HD set for my M&P which is my "nightstand" home defense weapon. But I returned the HD sights for the PPQ and ordered Trijicon's Bright and Tough night sights for it. These present a highlighted 3-dot sight picture in daylight and the same green glowing 3-dot picture at night. Just make sure you know which style you are comfortable with ahead of time. BTW, it requires a heck of a pounding to get M&P sights off, and new ones back on. Several YouTube videos show this as easy. It may be on an older gun. On my relatively new M&Ps it was challenging. I have done it now for two M&Ps successfully using a disposable aluminum drift punch. If you are not comfortable with this step, you may want to let your gunsmith handle it. By contrast the PPQ sights are very easy to remove.
Pros:
  • Quality sturdiness
Cons:
  • Looses 3-dot picture, by design
Best Used for:
  • nighttime security
