Tex's Review of TRU-SPEC BDU Original Shorts - Men's

Yes, these are my favorite shorts of all time, including the great Banana Republic men's cargo shorts from the 1980s before they switched to ladies' fashion. Let me list the ways that these Tru-Spec BDU shorts are great: 1) They are made of mid-weight, 100% cotton, rip-stop material. It's breathable in hot weather, and it's durable. I get a decade or more of regular use out of a pair. 2) They have a roomy cut that is not confining and that contributes to good ventilation in hot weather. 3) They have great pockets with lots of room for carrying what you need, especially the two front and two side cargo pockets. I almost never need to use the rear pockets. The cargo pockets have two buttons for maximum security if you're traveling in pickpocket country. Or you can keep one unbuttoned for decent security and easy access. With both unbuttoned, I can easily stuff my boonie hat in one when I get out of the sun. And then there is the cell phone pocket sewn behind each cargo pocket, so they are good for both right and left-handers. They are plenty big and deep enough for my iPhone 15 Plus in its protective case. About 1" of my phone sticks above the pocket for a perfect combination of maximum security and easy access. This is the only brand of BDU shorts that I know of that has this outstanding feature. 4) My favorite color is the Dessert Tiger Stripe design, and again, this is the only brand of BDU shorts that offers it. I have often wondered who was the camo genius who took the original Vietnam jungle tiger stripe design that was way too dark for blending in back here in Texas, and thought of converting it to a dessert pattern. For hunting in South or West Texas, it's an outstanding color and pattern. Besides, it's also light-colored enough to not absorb a lot of heat from the sun in the summer. Finally, as with all camo patterns, the pattern hides normal stains very well. 5) These shorts come with a sturdy, brass, YKK zipper that cannot be beat. I never understood why some dummy designed military fatigues with button flys, so that combat soldiers in war zones had to waste precious seconds fumbling to get their flys open, and then waste precious more seconds fumbling to get their flys closed again. Or why this really stoopid idea ever translated to the civilian clothing market. At any rate, Tru-Spec fixed this deplorable situation with a top-quality zipper. 6) A few years ago I had to contact Tru-Spec customer service by email after they got a bad batch of zippers that I thought may have been counterfeit knock-offs of YKK. The defective zippers failed on three pairs of shorts that I purchased at the same time. Tru-Spec replaced every pair and paid for the shipping, too. You can't beat that for standing behind their product.
