Barboursville Bill's Review of Truglo Tactical 3-9x42 AR Rifle Scope

This AR scope has great clarity all the way out to maximum power--even at the edges. For the price, it compares directly to the Bushnell AR Optics and AR/223 scopes when on sale. I did not like the Bushnell 1-4X24 because it did not have crosshairs in the reticle, just a series of horseshoe-patterned dots with one in the middle with very poor illumination, and unforgiving eye relief. This scope is far superior in these respects, with a duplex reticle that doesn't require illumination, although it is available in red and green.

On mine, the turret dials must be lifted to change settings, keeping them safe from being knocked off kilter; and they have positive tactile and audible clicks. There is no parallax dial, but at max power of nine, I haven't seen any problem with this. The scope comes with a throw-down power lever, and nice lens caps. It even comes with its own mount, although it's a bit heavy. The scope, itself, weighs the same as the Bushnells. I docked it one star for the weight.

I've hit the 300yd 8" X 10" steels easily, simply by dialing the yardage on the elevation dial after zeroing at 100yds. For shooters who prefer to hold their shots rather than dial them in, a drawback is the thickness of the dots on the reticle which some may object to. For shooters who use a ballistic chart and like to dial, it's a mystery what the elevation dial is going to give you since it's only noted in yards. For the same reason, this scope is wedded to a 55gr 223/556 cartridge with a 16" (plus the .125" for the NFA) barrel.
Pros:
  • Great Clarity
Cons:
  • weight
Best Used for:
  • Bench shooters
