LipschitzWrath's Review of TRYBE Defense AR Barrel, 9mm Luger

Received the barrel and it appears to be good quality, especially given the price. Muzzle threads are good, the melonite is uniform, and it fit snugly in the upper receiver.

Unfortunately, this barrel possesses a flaw that made it completely unusable for me. You see, I purchased this barrel to make a mock "Colt SMG" style 9mm AR build. These guns have an FSB on them. Unfortunately, they placed the "gas block journal" where you would mount said FSB in the wrong location. No, 9mm's don't use a gas block, but you still need the correct mounting surface to mount the FSB. The journal on this barrel sits somewhere between 0.5 and 1.0 inches underneath a carbine length handguard. Thus, it is unusable.

I suspect that this is because they didn't account for the lack of a barrel extension on a 9mm AR barrel. Thus, they effectively made the barrel shorter, likely without intending to. This is also illustrated by the fact that Ballistic Advantage and KAK Industries sell an 11" 9mm barrel. Right there in the product description for either of those barrels, they explain that an 11" 9mm barrel has the same external dimensions as a 10.5" 5.56 barrel, but the effective barrel length (using the ATF barrel measurement method) winds up coming out to 11". In other words, they are accounting for the lack of a barrel extension.

For this barrel, Trybe did not do the same.

To make matters worse, this is one of the only 9mm barrels with this profile out there with 1/2x28 threads. There are tons with 1/2x36 threads, but that was not an option for me as the muzzle device I am using is 1/2x28 and YHM has discontinued them, so buying a 1/2x36 version was not an option.

Nonetheless, the barrel is a tremendous value and would work for just about anyone that isn't trying to install an FSB at the carbine length handguard location.

Another reviewer made mention of this but did not elaborate. I decided to gamble anyways and lost. Beware.

Given the rarity of barrels of this contour with 1/2x28 threads, I really hope Trybe would fix this dimensional discrepancy. They would essentially have a corner on the market.
Pros:
  • Quality built
Cons:
  • Incorrect dimensions
Best Used for:
  • Installs w/o FSB
Would Recommend: Yes
