Matt Miller's Review of TRYBE Defense AR-15 Extra Lightweight M-LOK Handguard w/ Cut Away Rail

Overall, this is a pretty nice handguard for the money. It doesn’t stack up to the SLR or VSeven hand guards I have on other builds, but it is also a good bit less expensive.

The two issues I have are:

1). The mounting system and screws used to attach the handguard to the barrel nut could be better. It is a simple compression mount on the barrel nut. The screws go from one side of the underside on the handguard into the other. They could be a little longer for sure but even better would be a screw and nut system where they screws into a nut that could be recessed into the opposite side on the handguard. I believe this will be OK but it would definitely look and feel better if this system was a lilttle more robust.

2). The handguard actually interfered slightly with my lower to the point the takedown pins wouldn’t align properly and go in. I ended up having to file off a tiny bit of material from the lower edge of the handguard to get the pins to go in. I tried inserting the pins to mate the upper to the lower with the handguard uninstalled and it worked fine, so it was definitely the handguard causing the slight alignment issue. This was confirmed by some rub marks on the lower where the FDE from the handguard was clearly coming off on the rounded pin anchor holes on the lower. Again, not a big deal and nothing 5 minutes with a file didn’t fix but I’d rather not have to file away on my handguard just to get it to fit.

Overall finish seems pretty nice but time will tell. Color match with my other FDE furniture and parts is quite good (if you care about those sorts of things).

Again, pretty good value for a pretty nice handguard.
Pros:
  • Price / Value
  • Pretty good finish
Cons:
  • Slight fitment issue requiring some adjustments
  • Less robust handguard to barrel nut mating system than I would prefer
