mikey's Review of TRYBE Defense AR-15 Magnite Ultra Function Lightweight M-LOK Handguard w/ Full Top Rail
i ordered this to give my ar a makeover, the handguard looks cool and i like the simple style of it.
the handguard is very light. it's lighter than many other things on my bench, like a low pro gas block, or even a pocket knife. it's pretty light.
specs that i could find on the trybe website say that the barrel nut should be torqued to 35-40 foot pounds, and the mounting screws to not be torqued higher than 3 foot pounds (36 inch pounds).
i chose to torque the barrel nut to a little over 30 foot pounds, being afraid of ruining the magnite barrel nut. this seems to have been a good idea given what happens next.
the first mounting screw i attempted to torque to 30 inch pounds instead of 36 (again, trying not to ruin the handguard) but yet 30 inch pounds was too much and i could hear the handguard creaking and ultimately righty tighty became righty loosey.
i left that mounting screw where it was, so it can have at least a little bit of thread as a treat, instead of continuing to strip the threads.
the second mounting screw i decided to torque even lower, to 20 inch pounds, but as i was nearing the 20 inch pounds i could hear the handguard creaking and decided to stop where i was.
i'm quite disappointed with the mounting screws, but they should be fine as they are right now. if i ever have to take the handguard off, it's probably not going back on right.
it does look sleek, it is very light, i just wish it went on correctly.
