Mike M's Review of Vaultek Safe SL20 Slider Bluetooth Pistol Vault

BOTH UNITS ORDERED:
I bought the SL20 (non-biometric version) from OP and a NSL20i (biometric version) from another site. The NSL20i came first and I set it up with no problems other than not being able to connect to my phone's app via bluetooth. No biggie but still kinda disappointed. If you go to your app store and read the reviews, you'll see Vaultek is kinda a hot mess with various apps and it's unclear as to which app does which function. Either way, it simply wouldn't connect and I don't care enough to try contacting support right now. It is worth noting that without the app/bluetooth connection, you can't use the Smartkey Nano button. I leave the concept of using a one-press button to open your gun safe up to you - you better squirrel that thing away somewhere no child can find. The Smartkey Nano button is a separate purchase, FYI.

THE NSL20i CASE:
The case itself is super slick, very sturdy, the buttons feel great, the wall installation is easy and secure, the option to have the LED light up when you open is helpful (turn it off if you like), the sliding mechanism is super smooth, the process to reprogram the master code is simple, the process to program your fingerprints is easy. Do your research on what can fit inside, though. Optics and flashlight attachments may limit your choices. I currently store a Sig P365XL with Romeo Zero optic, Streamlight TLR6 light, True Precision barrel (extends out just a bit) and it fits very nice. I intend to use the other case for my Springfield XD40 4", no optic, Streamlight TLR4, which fits but is a tight squeeze in the foam due to the TRL4 being so fat (I could always trim the foam for an easier slide in/out). Speaking of the other case:

THE SL20 CASE:
I had to warranty the SL20 that I ordered from Optics Planet back to Vaultek. The process to change the master code just wasn't working. Vaultek Support was nice and timely in their responses. They asked me to make a video to show the problem, so I tossed a demonstration video on YouTube and they quickly started the RMA process. However, I am going to upgrade that exchange to the NSL20i so I can have the fingerprint reader. Yes, purists will say they don't want to rely on biometrics to save your family's life and while I understand that, I haven't had one failure to open. I use this for my daily carry so I'm opening up this safe at least twice per day. I'm not here to debate that issue, it's your personal choice. If you don't want the fingerprint reader, get the SL20 and save yourself some money.

EXTRA:
One thing I was pleasantly surprised about the NSL20i was after mounting the safe on a wall, I discovered that the fingerprint reader reads you in any orientation. I thought I would have to reprogram since I calibrated it while my finger was facing one direction and due to the safe being mounted on the wall I have to press my finger 90* offset. Nope, it reads just fine any direction.
Pros:
  • Sturdy
  • Smooth
  • Many functions and features
Cons:
  • one of two units warrantied
  • app is total garbage
Would Recommend: Yes
