Ed's Review of Volquartsen Firearms 10/22 22 LR UltraLite Barrel

Volquartsen 10/22 22 LR UltraLite Barrel is a much light weight version of the standard Ruger barrel. I purchased it to replace the hammer forged bull barrel on my Ruger 10/22 target model. After installing the barrel and firing Remington Thunderbolt 22s I found the accuracy is very good. I can easily achieve quarter size groupings at 50 yards with no problem. I did not test various loads for accuracy yet. I give the barrel an A+ for accuracy, so far. I am impressed with the light weight. It changed the way my Ruger 10/22 handled. I am really happy with the way it now handles. Before, it was heavy and hard to carry and swing into position to shoot. Now, it handles so much better.

Volquartsen makes the UltraLite barrel in silver and black ends. I purchased the black version. I am not too happy with the quality of the black ends and if I had to do over would most likely not choose the black version. The black ends cost almost $50.00 more. The black ends are painted. As a result, based on my experience they are prone to scratching. There are no instructions with the barrel. I received a box, foam padding and the barrel. You are on your own for installation. The barrel fitment into the receiver was very tight, so tight that I scratched the black paint in several places on the end of the barrel. It would be nice if there were instructions or a word of caution on how to properly install the barrel and tips on what to do and what to look out for. In hindsight, I would not have paid $50 more for the black ends but just painted it myself. Now, I am going to have to uninstall my barrel, sand down the end and repaint it.
