E's Review of Volquartsen Firearms CNC-Machined Bolt for Ruger 10/22 and 22LR
I bought this Volquartsen bolt for a rifle I built made entirely of Volquartsen parts, minus the stock which was made by Hogue. I couldn't be happier with this bolt.
First off, it matches all the other Volquartsen components on the rifle. Second, and this is purely aesthetic, it's black, which is exactly the color I was looking for. Third, and I might be imagining this, but it seems as if the finish is "slick", and it seems to function/operate smoother than other bolts I've used in the past (made by other manufacturers and Volquartsen). Fourth, I eluded to this in my previous point, is that it seems to function/operate very smoothly, with no hang ups due to friction (yet). Finally, the bolt handle is very secure.
Expanding on that last point, Ruger 10/22 bolt handles don't attach to the bolt but to the spring rod, whereas all the Volquartsen bolts I've owned had the handle attach directly to it. Previous Volquartsen bolts I've owned had the bolt handle attach directly to the bolt via some kind of detent, in which the handle would "pop out" of the handle if pulled out with enough force...it was solid enough for my purposes, but I assume it could inadvertently detach under the right circumstances. However, this NEW bolt has a handle that attaches via a hex screw - it may make it slightly more difficult to field strip (since you need to remove the handle to disassemble), but it will also be much more secure during normal operation. I prefer this new set up, but it might be because I don't clean my weapons frequently enough (for those of you picked up on the comment above about the bolt hang up in the receiver).
Only downside I can think of is the high-ish price, but Volquartsen products are usually priced higher than average. It's a company that has a very good reputation that produces components with very tight tolerances. Some people think the tolerances can be too tight, making the overall gun "picky" with ammunition, or making the parts difficult to assemble due to "fitting". But I'm not reviewing the company, I'm only reviewing this one part - the bolt - and I'm extremely satisfied. Then again, I've owned LOTS of Volquartsen products, I've always been happy with all of their parts...just wanted to add that last point because, as a loyal customer, my review may contain some bias.
Pros:
- High quality
- smooth operation
- slick texture
- excellent interoperability
Best Used for:
- high end Ruger rimfire semi auto
