Legacy Reviewer's Review of Vortex Crossfire II 3-9x40mm 1in Tube Second Focal Plane Rifle Scope

I was looking to assemble an inexpensive, accurate, reliable, American made equipment package (less than $600 including uncle Sam). I started with the Ruger American 30.06 and added the Vortex Crossfire II 3x9 40 with their 1inch aluminum rings. I zeroed it in at the range and fired approx. 60 rounds, mixing 180, 165, and 150 grain off-the-shelf ammo. I was impressed with the performance of both the Ruger and the Vortex scope and was looking forward to a long happy relationship. However, when I returned to the range last week, and began to sight my target, I could not see through the scope. Upon closer inspection, I found the Ocular lens dislodged. I have handled the equipment with extreme care both in storage, transport, and cleaning and was surprised to find the lens dislodged.

I contacted Vortex technical support, and they too were surprised and very apologetic. They e-mailed a pre-paid Fedex label to return the scope for service. All in all Vortex service is very good, people are polite and care about their product and service. Initial contact was 08/27 scope was sent, serviced (repaired not replaced), and returned by 09/11 (God bless America).

HOWEVER, my concern is reliability. A scope should not fail after ~60 rounds, even a $150 scope. If Vortex feels their manufacturing quality cannot withstand the force of a 30.06, then they should indicate the scope is not designed for the caliber. No such information/warning exists, therefore, I am left feeling the quality of the product is lacking.

I will have the scope remounted and continue usage. Fair warning to those evaluating Vortex scopes.
