Gregor's Review of Vortex Diamondback 10x42mm Binoculars
The Vortex Diamondback 10x42's are wonderful binoculars. I tested them head to head with a couple models of another good brand and returned the others. They are solid in the hand, well-built and ergonomic, focus smoothly, are crisp and clear, and let in a lot of light. The aesthetics of using them are just plain pleasant--very enjoyable to use. Moreover, the reputation of the Vortex warranty--should I ever need it--is excellent. I also like the case. Bottom-line, I am extremely happy with them (and also own a pair of Vortex D-back 8x32's, which I love).
I bought the 10x42's primarily for elk (and deer) hunting--after the end of the season (when frustrated with the lousy performance of some cheaper binoculars I had and am now happily rid of). So I have not yet used the D-backs for their intended purpose. I have been using them regularly, however, around our mountainous property in Colorado and just love 'em. So I'm confident they will perform very well next hunting season.
Admittedly, I would love to own a $2000 pair of Leica's or Swarovski's--however the price is simply too steep for the incremental quality (and my budget). Also I am a once-a-year hunter. If it were my main hobby and I hunted much more frequently and avidly, as do some friends, I might bite the bullet and spring for top-of-the-line. But maybe not... because for 10% of that breathtaking price, the Vortex Diamondback 10x42's are an outstanding value. The Vortex performance plus fantastic price/value ratio thrill my Scottish blood. Think I will go grab them and give the property a scan...!
