Tutu's Review of Vortex OPMOD Diamondback HD 10x42mm Roof Prism Binoculars
So I tried the Viper HD, the OPMOD Diamondback HD, and the Crossfire HD. I didn't like the Viper locking diopter; it seemed too difficult to pull, adjust, and lock in place. Since I'm sharing these with my wife, and I knew she would struggle with the diopter, the Viper's were out. The Crossfires were easy to use and produced an excellent image, in my opinion, so I kept the Crossfires for my wife. I then ordered the OPMOD Diamondback HD's, and compared them to the Crossfires. I got the 10x42 version, since the Crossfires were 8x42 and I didn't want to duplicate the field of view and magnification. Ease of use on the Diamondback's was excellent, as was the image. The Diamondback's were shorter than the Crossfires, so that was a revelation. I like the ergonomics on both binoculars, so my wife gets the Crossfires and I get the Diamonbacks.
Here's what I wish I knew: what is the material difference between the OPMOD and regular Diamondbacks, besides the color. Is the glass different, is the roof prism different, are any of the materials different? There is a significant price difference, so I think there must be a reason for that. It just isn't clear in the description and specs of the respective Diamondbacks.
Bottom line, if you are a casual birdwatcher and want a great pair of binoculars that fit the bill and don't break the bank, I highly recommend either the Crossfire HD or the OPMOD Diamonback HD binoculars. Also, Optics Planet is a great place to buy them. Easy.
