Gavin's Review of Vortex OPMOD Diamondback Tactical 6-24x50mm Rifle Scope, 30mm Tube, First Focal Plane (FFP)

I was very excited for this optic and excited to go out and hunt with it and touch some longer distances with it attached to my 7PRC. The first attempt at sighting in this rifle was bad, but I didn’t laser sight it before so that’s on me. I figured I would give it another shot and laser sight it in next time. After multiple attempts at laser-bore sighting and going out and shooting, I would still experience gross inaccuracy. I’ve made sure that all the mounting hardware for the optic was tight and at proper torque, and I’ve been mindful of being gentle, but sometimes while hunting in the mountains, it’s difficult to do that. I’ve looked into ballistic charts, and I’ve tried to do everything I can to reduce any inaccuracies that I could and five minutes before typing in this review, while laser-bore sighting my rifle, I have found that even gently racking the bolt back and fourth and dry firing, has knocked my sites off at least an inch or two to the left and right and at least an inch up or down, each shot typically changed in a different direction. So based off of the results I’ve come to experience, it seems that I will have to keep my rifle and optic, bubble wrapped and carry it in whatever the best rifle case is, because I now have zero confidence that I will be anywhere close to my zero between leaving my home and driving out to my hunting spot. I really do love vortex and optics planet, the binoculars I have from Vortex are the best so choosing an optic from Vortex seemed to be the most reasonable decision, and at the discounted price that’s been the same for over a year, it seems like a good deal, but now I feel that the markdown price is just a way to get people to buy the optic year-round, because I’ve never seen it at the full price. I’ve been on quite a few hunts with this rifle and I’m glad that I was not successful because I probably would’ve wounded the animal or missed it completely and I’m hoping that the same doesn’t happen this year but in order to have any confidence in harvesting an animal, I will probably have to laser site my rifle before I leave and after I get to my hunting location, and repeat that process every time I even pick my rifle up.
Pros:
  • Appearance, clarity, price, adjustment features
Cons:
  • Does not hold a zero
  • Extremely sensitive
