Working Man Hunter's Review of Vortex Ranger 1300 Laser Rangefinder w/ HCD

Being an avid whitetail Bowhunter I tagged along on a buddy's western mule deer rifle hunt last year in anticipation of my own rifle hunt I had coming up in 2020. On that first trip I quickly realized my range finder needed a serious upgrade from my current bowhunting set up. I'm comfortable rifle shooting range at an animal is around 400-500 yards max. I assumed the 1300 yard range finder would be adequate, so I went with the Vortex 1300. I just got back from my 2020 rifle hunt and cannot explain how disappointed I was in this range finder. After a week in varying field conditions trying to capture ranges, the farthest return I consistently got was 550 to 600 yards MAX. Worst thing was at the moment of truth with a nice buck at about 360 yards downhill with a hint of snow flurries it failed completely and wouldn't read at all. Extremely frustrating. Feel like I threw $300 down the drain. I can still use for Bowhunting and targets 100 yards and in behind the house but that's it. Now I feel like I have a 3rd range finder for bowhunting and I have to save up again and look at something over $1200 in a legacy brand to be worthwhile for rifle hunts.
Best Used for:
  • Field conditions 300yards and less
