Flailure's Review of Vortex Razor AMG UH-1 Holographic Red Dot Sight
Found this to be a very nice alternative/improvement over the other holographic sight (eotech) at a fairly significant discount (depends on sales and discounts of course). Love the rechargeable battery option, and function was excellent. Does have a shade of green to it, but in a pitch black room, does not appear to emit any light anywhere, (though I have heard that some earlier ones did, I can confirm that mine does not). It has most of the weaknesses (and consequently all of the strengths) of the holographic sight system, I wont go into details here, if you want to know the differences between holographic and standard red dot, a quick google/bing/yahoo(seriously, switch to google already) will illuminate the differences, and I will mainly lean people towards stand red dot when I can, especially with holosun having a red dot that functions very close to a holographic, but with significant advantages (ie, greatly increased battery life, better looking reticle), and vortex having a etched reticle red dot, which will function even if the battery runs out (with some modicum of disadvantages), holographics really just fill that niche, and this does the job with aplomb.
One note, while the mount of this optic is made for a standard picatinny, the sides extend down further than most mounts, meaning if you have a picatinny rail on a gun without adequate clearance beneath it (ie, ruger pc carbine, or any picatinny cut into a guns receiver and wider than an ar, you will find the optic cannot fit. If vortex had beveled the bottom sides on the inside, or even better, shaved them down to what most mounts use, this would not be an issue. I cant see this being an issue on most guns that it would be used on normally however, most guns are either the same with as a picatinny or narrower, or have the rail attached a bit higher than the receiver with adequate clearance). Probably only a very few guns where it will not work, only 2 I know off hand are ruger pc9 carbine, and the somewhat frugal aftermarket rail attached to my remington shotgun (I forget the name of the manufacturer or I would let you know). I can confirm that vortex customer service will not resolve this issue as the picatinny spec is standard (and doesnt have a lot of a standard when it comes to clearance below the rail) but it is kind of rare that a manufacturer would make a picatinny mount base as deep as cut in the vortex uh-1.
