F1fanatic's Review of Vortex RT45 Offset Mount for Razor Red Dot

I like to shoot 3 gun matches and I run a vortex venom on a 45 degree mount under my scope. This mount worked ok for maybe a couple seasons. Though I did have to retighten it very carefully before every match, seriously careful. Even with blue loc-tite it would eventually back out. It finally gave up the ghost on my first match stage yesterday, bummer. I think vortex would probably replace it, no questions asked, but the design is very poor. No wonder it stripped out. The pinch bolt is tiny(more grub screw like) and it threads into a dainty piece of the cast aluminum and only partially engaging the rail. Not to mention I'm only getting 3-5 threads of bite from the bolt. 5 maximum. So yeah. But if you want to run a vortex red dot on a 45 degree mount this is your only option from what I can tell. Pretty sure my venom didn't attach straight away either, there was a little fine gun-smithing done in that respect as well, and the reason why vortex gets such low marks from me in the mount dept. Really poor showing and on top of that I have a Vortex Spitfire mount that very much tells a similar tale.
Anyway, I made this mount work by taking it apart and putting it in my drill press. I drilled all the way through the bolt threads and across to other side of the rail and into the meat of the mount where there was plenty of blank to drill into. Something that should have been done in the beginning from vortex. I chased it with an 8/32 –die and now I run a bolt all the way across the rail. The bolt has 10-13 threads of engagement now instead of 3-5 and it grips from both sides of the rail. ta-da. Not hard, a shame you have to pay for the privilege to do what should've been done already.

So do I recommend this mount? Not really, but its the only game in town if you want to run a vortex red dot on a 45 degree mount. You can make it work. Hope your decent with a drill press and a tap and die. Until Vortex figures out the mount game you will be doing this mod sooner or later. Guaranteed. Maybe okay for airsoft or pellet gun duty in the meantime.
Pros:
  • fits vortex red dots..sorta
Cons:
  • very light duty
Best Used for:
  • airsoft, pellet gun, 22lr max...unless moded
Would Recommend: No
