KonaGolden's Review of Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8x24mm Rifle Scope
First, ask yourself what the purpose of this scope will be for you. This scope is a bit heavy for its size. The glass is pretty good, better than most, not as good as some in this price range. I've had a couple with glass that's less clear than others, so check the scope carefully. In this price range, consistency can be a bit lacking. There's edge distortion at higher powers, but it's reasonably bright for its size and price range. To me, the eye box is not as good as my Leupold, and I prefer the Leupold glass, but it's very close.
I do like the reticle. The 2/3rd circle around the crosshairs helps you get on target faster. There are 4 additional hash lines, with bullet drop compensation, besides the zero crosshair, but no hash lines or dots for windage. I prefer this reticle to most of the Leupold reticles, except I do like the tactical milling reticle on the Leupold Patrol. Half mil hash lines on both elevation & windage. I also prefer the light weight and glass on the Leupold a little better, but the cost is a little more.
I have less use for illuminated reticles. I find they're rarely needed. On this Vortex, only settings 4, 5 and 6 are useful to me. 1, 2 & 3 are not any better than the unlit reticle. 7 starts showing a red ring at the edges of the scope. 8, 9 are too bright and 10 washes everything out, turning the inside of the scope red. The off position between levels is a nice feature if you need an illuminated reticle, though. For daylight hours, illumination is not really useful. In low light, anything over 4, 5, or 6 is way too bright.
The illumination control is OK. Easy to reach and turn, but no positive stop between settings, so be careful you get turned off and the dial in the middle of its travel between stops. The windage turret is covered & has fine adjustments, though it's easy to turn past your desired stop. The feel in the counterclockwise direction is a little different from the clockwise feel. It's rougher, but both directions have a decent audible click to them. The elevation turret (also covered) is better; more consistent in both directions, more positive stop between settings. Once you set elevation, I'd leave it alone and learn the dope on your reticles 4 additional hash lines for your particular rounds. It will be much faster to adjust elevation.
If you can get these on sale, it's a good deal, but not great. If you're looking for a hunting rifle scope, I would look for something lighter if you aren't a stand or blind hunter. For hunting I also prefer to spend the extra dollars on a better scope with better glass over illumination. These are my choices, and yours will be different. Re-read the first sentence.
