gulielmi2002's Review of Vortex Venom 1x26.5mm Red Dot Sight

Put this red dot on a Chiappa Rhino 6" 357 mag. At 25 yards was able to consistently hit sub 1 inch groups with ease. Decided to try my luck at 100 yards without adjustment to see what the Rhino red dot combo would do, it was on the mark which impressed me. Despite what I have read in other reviews, when you adjust the windage and elevation, you can feel (barely but it's there) and see the clicks, but you cannot hear them. The only short comings I have found with the venom is the supplied base. The base is very easy to strip the threats that hold the venom to the base. The instructions do not specify what torque is needed for proper fitment. I contacted via email Vortex about the issue, and without any hassle or questions, they shipped a new base out to me. I asked them about the recommended torque and was instructed: 13 in-lb without Loctite or 10 in-lb with Loctite for the screws that hold the Venom to the base, and 10 to 20 in-lb for the clamp screw. Even at 10 in-lbs with Loctite you might strip the threads. This is what recommend doing: 8 in-lbs with Loctite blue on the screws that hold the venom to the base and 15 in-lb on the clamp screw. Because I have three of these bases(the original base, the base sent by Vortex as a replacement, and I bought a second venom), I was able to verify these numbers.

I was impressed so much with my the venom on my rhino that I bought a venom for my 1911. This required me to buy a dovetail base. I got the burris fastfire base and torqued that to the instructions of 12 in-lb with Loctite and did not have any stripping issues as was the case for the original venom base.

I have read a view of the red dot not being crisp. This is not caused by a defect with the venom; it is caused by a residue on the LED lens. This lens is near the two screws holding the venom to the base. Simply clean this residue off, and the red dot is crisp and clear as it should be.
