Most Helpful Positive Review First spotting scope -- very impressed
I recently got the straight Vortex Viper HD 15-45x65 as my first spotting scope, and I'm very happy with it. It's the first high-end spotting scope I've handled, so I don't have a point of comparison to Leica/Swarovski/Zeiss products, but I can't imagine why I would need a better picture than this. In addition to the clear picture, everything about it seems rock-solid, and every moving part is really smooth. My only little nitpick is that the neoprene protective cover it comes with doesn't have a very good hole for the focusing knobs -- the sides of the hole are always coming into contact...

Great product

Great scope on a relative budget for scopes. If you've got the cash I'd say go for the upgrade in next step up in Vortex scopes either by model or at an x85 level. If not, I doubt you'll be disappointed. Except for extremely long distances (like 5 miles) images are clear and crisp.

All I can say is wow!! This scope is what I was looking for. Out of the box you can tell it is a high quality scope and built like a tank. This is my first high quiltity scope and when taking it out for the first time I was blown away from the clearity this bad boy has.

Purchase comments for my Vortex Viper HD 15-45x65 Angled Spotting Scope

by Mark, from CA, United States Written on July 29, 2017
Needed to be able to see 30-06 groupings out up to 350 yards clearly for my yearly Elk hunting trips. The Vortex Viper HD 15-45x65 Angled Spotting Scope really helped with the sighting and got me comfortable with my gear such that in the past 6 years I've harvested a nice elk on every trip. Most shots were around 300 yards and all but one were a one shot harvest. The Vortex Optics are an excellent dollar value. I had looked at more expensive scopes but after really comparing them side by side the choice was pretty easy.
Pros:
  • High quality
Cons:
  • lower cost
Best Used for:
  • many uses

Glad I made the up grade

by Gene, from AZ, United States Written on January 11, 2017
I've wanted a good spotting scope for some time. After numerous investments in lesser quality products I was impressed when a friend purchased the razor and was at the range spotting for him during a sight in period for his family. After looking through the scope and seeing a bug land at 50 yards and then fly off I know I had to have one. I chose the viper and was I glad. I took it the range to shoot and the clarity of the unit was very impressive, leaving me no doubt about the shots. I could see holes made by 22 cal. bullets at 200 yards with no problem.
Pros:
  • good glass
  • A REALLY NICE PRODUCT FOR THE PRICE
  • Easy to set up and adjustments are precise
Cons:
  • Getting the protective cover on the unit
Best Used for:
  • range work
  • Packing in the field

Much better than expected

by Loon, Verified Owner from TN, United States Written on November 6, 2016
my older spotting scopes left me wanting one of the higher end units available, but not desiring to drop a couple grand I researched and settled on trying out the Vortex Viper. WOW, I feel like I have what I was wanting and with enough left to buy another gun that's been on the list. Super Product in all regards, much better than expected.

First HD Spotting Scope - WOW!

by Pete, from OH, United States Written on October 18, 2016
This is my first spotting scope and I did extensive research before I purchased a Vortex Viper HD 15-45x65. I purchased the scope solely to be used at the gun range for spotting between 100 yards and up to 600 yards. Though I am not using the scope for hunting, I feel that the weight of the scope was reasonable and would not hesitate to use for hunting. I would also like to note that the scope does not include a case or a tripod. I looked at 60MM to 80MM scopes in a variety of price ranges and choose the Vortex Viper. I have Vortex rifle scopes and was well aware of the quality and the scope did not disappoint. I have no issues seeing .223 caliber rounds out to 200 yards of white paper targets. On highlighted (splatter) targets I can 30 caliber out to 600 yards and white paper targets for 30 caliber out to 300 yards. The dual focus rings where smooth, and I had no issue focusing. It comes with lens caps and neoprene cover which my only issue was the difficulty of getting the cover on the unit. I got the unit for under $500 with special offer, and free shipping which I thought was great deal. Very pleased with scope, highly recommend it!
Pros:
  • Lens Caps
  • micro adjustment
  • Dual Focus
Cons:
  • neoprene cover
Best Used for:
  • Target & Hunting

Versatile Spotting Scope at an Affordable Price

by King of the Wild Frontier, from GA, United States Written on February 27, 2016
My primary mission for this spotting scope is viewing targets at the shooting range. Looking for a scope with good clarity without spending a fortune.

I used my new scope at the range last weekend. It was a cloudy overcast day with intermittent mist. Found a Velbon mini pro fluid pan head tripod in the closet, so I used this with the scope. It worked extremely well.

The Vortex Viper HD glass allowed me to clearly see 7.62 impacts at 200 yds. This wasn't a clear high visibility day, so I was happy. I like being able to rotate the scope adjusting the eyepiece position. The dual focus rings were easy to use and effective. It came with all lense covers. I tied the front lense cover to a loop on the carry case using light cord. You will have to wrestle the carry case on.

The other night we had clear night with a full moon. I went out on the back deck and focused on the moon. The detail was amazing. I'm considering a iPhone attachment for photos.
Pros:
  • Clarity
  • Dual Focus
  • Lense covers included
  • Rotating tripod ring
Cons:
  • None
Best Used for:
  • Target shooting
  • wildlife viewing

Best Spotting Scope on the Market

by JB, from NV, United States Written on January 7, 2016
Great for watching wildlife. I got this as a Christmas present for my husband and he absolutely loves it! We live out in the country and have a lot of deer, birds, rabbits, and other wildlife on our land. This works great for viewing wildlife far away.
