Sherlocbonz's Review of Vortex Viper HD 3-15x44 Rifle Scope, 30mm Tube, Second Focal Plane

I'm in the process of doing an all Kidd 10/22 clone for casual bench shooting and plinking. I wanted to put on a red dot but after coming to grips with the fact I can't see well enough for 50yd shots much less 100yd, I went on a quest for a scope. I thought what I was after would be pretty easy to find, but I was wrong. My wish list for a scope was:
1. Max magnification of 12 to 18x.
2. Simple illuminated reticle with 1 MOA or smaller dot.
3. 1/4MOA click adjustments.
4. Parallax adjustment.
5. Exposed turret for elevation.

The Viper HD checked all the boxes. It was a little more than I wanted to spend, but I waited for and Optics Planet sale and good coupon, and ended up picking the 3-15 x 44 for about 2x the cost of a comparable rimfire (secret code for "low feature") scope, so I'm really happy with the purchase.

Glass is very clear, as you would expect from Vortex.
Scope picture is bright as you would expect from a 44mm objective and a 30mm tube.
Parallax adjustment knob on the side with settings from 20yd to infinity.
I loved the VMR-3 reticle. It is very simple, with a 0.12 MOA red dot in the center. I thought that dot might be difficult to see, but it really pops against a target. It will be perfect for my eyes where a non-illuminated reticle tends to get lost in the bullseye.
This has an adjustable turret for elevation, and the windage turret is covered. Maybe not ideal for larger caliber rifles, but for .22LR it was exactly what I wanted.

I can't write a review of a Vortex product without mentioning Vortex's warranty and customer service. Best in the business, maybe in any business. I haven't had to use the warranty on this scope, but I did email with a couple of questions regarding fitment for my receiver and barrel. Had a real person with real answers get back to me within an hour. I took some measurements that they asked for, and had ring recommendations 10min after that. You may pay a little more but that service is baked in the price and worth every penny.
Pros:
  • Clear
  • great reticle
  • Bright but very small dot
Cons:
  • None
Would Recommend: Yes
