Blockader's Review of Yankee Hill Machine Slant Muzzle Brake/comp 6.8/7.62/9mm 1/2x36 Threads
Having run my 16" bbl AR9 build with just a thread protector on the muzzle for a few months I was finding it difficult to keep double taps on a 66% IDPA plate at 50+ yards. Though I figured the forces from the blowback action were the main contributor to the weapon movement I figured it was worth a shot to try a comp/brake. There are not a ton of options in 1/2x36 thread and there are not many reviews for the ones that are available (at least pertaining to 9mm), but the YHM slant brake seemed fairly aggressive and was on the less expensive side so it won my money.
I ran the PCC bare muzzle for a few mags and then installed the slant brake for a few more. The ammo used was 115gr FMJ of the "plinking" variety. I also removed ear pro for a few rounds each to evaluate noise increase and did a concussion "test" with an empty beer can placed on a table 4" to the right of the muzzle.
With bare muzzle at 25 yards my double taps were mostly within a 6" circle on the steel plate. I could not reliably put the second shot of a double tap on the plate at 50 yards. The beer can did not even wriggle when the weapon was fired with the muzzle 4" away.
After field installing (my home range is in a field) the YHM slant brake the improvement was immediately obvious. My 25 yard double taps were all within 3" of each other, with some much closer. Most of my 50 yards double taps successfully landed. Recoil was somewhat reduced (still action movement present of course) and the muzzle remained significantly more still and level under fast shooting, which was what I was seeking. The brake did not cause the muzzle to be pushed down on shot strings, which is something I can't abide. Overall the comp/brake performed better than I expected for 9mm.
Report was slightly increased but not enough to cause ear ringing. Concussion to the side is noticeable with the beer can being flung about 6 feet away. Its nothing like the blast from a 5.56 or 7.62 brake though. I did not check for flash signature.
The brake is fairly heavy but that does not alone account for its effectiveness in stilling the muzzle, this unit does actually function at the end of a 16" 9mm barrel. It looks good, is affordable, and functioned well. I would have preferred a matte finish on the brake. Different ammunition and bullet weights may give different results, but for my purposes the YHM slant brake for 9mm is great.
