Rolando Zapata's Review of Yukon Ranger 5x42 LT Digital Night Vision Monocular
This review is based on my needs (night hog hunting) for this particular piece of equipment. I am reiterating what some of the previous reviews have mentioned.
The service from Optics Planet was great. The item arrived a day early and the recommendations from their service department have been extremely helpful.
1.I experienced problems with the lens caps from the get-go. They fall off easily. They need to be designed to stay on or come attached to the unit. (Lost one of the caps the first time I used it on a night hog hunt.
2. The focus is not hard to master but needs to have a tighter fit in order to hold it. I was looking at a feeder from a hunting blind and had to re-focus every time I picked the monocular up.
3. The IR illuminator points a bit to the left of the viewing area. (not a big deal)
4. The carrying bag for the monocular has got to be one of the poorest designs imaginable. It is way too small. You have a very real chance of turning them on when storing them in the bag (draining the batteries) and is incapable of holding ANY accessories.
5. Battery life is ok. I got thru a night’s hunting with one battery pack using it off and on thru out the night.
6. You do have some issues of readjusting your eye sight after using it. In my case it wasn’t an issue because I had a friend spotting with the Yukon and I was doing the shooting.
These issues are more annoying than actual impediments. Bottom line, the unit has a detection range of approximately 150-175 yards and a recognition range of 100 yards or less. For the price, I would not hesitate to recommend this unit. For now, it meets my needs and I can live with and adjust to all the little issues.
