Combat Hamster's Review of Zeiss Terra ED 10x42mm Outdoor Binocular

Looking through the Terra ED 10x42 is what I expect from Zeiss optics; wow. Briefly, the objects within the field of view in full light -"PoP"-. I'm left thinking wow the small tree bud 100 yds away really is deep purple this fall. Especially after I look through the same with standard binoculars. There is a minimum diffraction around the edges, which when compared to other binoculars is maybe a percent of the field of view while the others are a gradual blur with the center being the least affected. In low light I can see objects are a dark fuzzy when view with other optics. I noticed the Terra claim ED optics and I can only wonder how this compares to ED & HD Zeiss optical systems? Something to consider in my next purchase. The Mechanics are ok/good, but I have felt better. In addition, I was disappointed in the bottom rubber optical cover simply unable to stay attached to the binocular. I warped a few layers of electrical tape around the rubber edge covers which now give them a nice fit and hold them in place. So its a simple fix but this could be better out of the box. Accessory wise my purchase came with a nice strap and lens cloth; however, the case is a felt bag. I was disappointed to not see a case. Toward that point there is a low cost Condor Binocular Pouch recommended. So I will purchase this accessory but I would have liked for it to come with the binoculars. That said its the entry level Zeiss binocular, I understand the optics are from Zeiss but it is made in China, and the price is about 1/2 of the German made Conquest. Ergonomically, I like the weight how they feel and look; its definitely a Zeiss design. So I purchased these binoculars because of the Zeiss optics and the price but was disappointed by the lack of accessories (the case) and poor fitting lens cover. Over all, I am very satisfied with the binoculars and given the price would recommend them to myself and friends but warn them they are buying the Zeiss optics. The rest is, well, limited but then the price is 1/2 of the German made Binocular.
Pros:
  • Optics, price, and objects within field of view 'pOp'
Cons:
  • The case is a felt bag? Lens Covers fall off
