The .22 Long Rifle rimfire ammunition (5.6x15R – metric designation) cartridge is a long-established variety of ammunition. The .22 Long Rifle uses a heeled bullet, which means that the bullet is the same diameter as the case and has a narrower "heel" portion that fits in the case. The low recoil of the SK 22 Long Rifle cartridge makes it ideal for introductory firearms courses.![]()
The caliber of .22 Long Rifle Ammo is .22 caliber, the specified nominal internal diameter of the gun barrel bore - regardless of whether the bore is measured and whether the finished bore matches that specification. It is measured in inches or millimeters. The metric designation of the 22 Long Rifle Ammunition is 5.6x15mmR. 22 LR ammunition is used in a wide range of rifles, handguns, smoothbore shotguns, and submachine guns.
SK 22 Long Rifle Ammo is excellent ammunition. Performance varies between barrel length and the type of action. For example, bolt action rifles may perform differently than semi-automatic rifles. .22 LR is effective to 150 yards (140 m), though practical range tends to be less. After 150 yards, the round's ballistics are such that it will be difficult to compensate for the significant "drop." The relatively short effective range, low report, and light recoil have made it a favorite for use as a target practice cartridge. The cartridge's accuracy is good but not exceptional; various cartridges can have the same or better accuracy. A contributing factor in rifles is the transition of even a high-velocity cartridge projectile from supersonic to subsonic within 100 yards (91 m). As the bullet slows, the shock wave caused by supersonic travel overtakes the bullet and can disrupt its flight path, causing minor but measurable inaccuracy.
As a hunting cartridge rimfires are mainly used to kill small game. It is highly effective on squirrels and rabbits at distances closer than 150 yards (140 m) and on groundhogs, marmots, and foxes closer than 80 yards (73 m). It has been successfully used on large creatures such as coyotes, but the range should be limited to no farther than 65 yards (59 m); head and chest shots are mandatory with the most powerful .22 cartridge the hunter can use accurately.
Lead Round Nose ("LRN") is a bullet type designation signifying that the projectile is made entirely of lead with no jacket. Additionally, the nose of the bullet has a smooth, rounded shape with no pocket or hollow recess.
Lead Round Nose bullets are generally considered an economical option for range training purposes. LRN ammo will expand to some degree on impact with a reasonably solid target, making it a somewhat viable option for self-defense.
SK 22 Long Rifle Ammo is inexpensive ammo with low recoil, low noise, and a high accuracy-to-cost ratio. Good quality rimfire ammunition can be pretty accurate. Today, rimfire rounds are mainly used for hunting tiny pests, sports shooting, plinking, and inexpensive training. The . 22 LR ammo is the choice for several shooting events: Bullseye, plus divisions of metallic silhouette and pin shooting, and many others.
