That completely depends on how well you want to finish the edge on your knife. You can definitely get a knife sharp using just the coarse, but most professional sharpeners will use a combination of both course and fine stones to achieve the best edge.

This 6" x 2.5" sharpening stone features multiple layers of micron-sized monicyalrid diamonds bonded in nickel to a flat metal surface. The non-slip base with rubber feet allow you to safely use the Smith's Diamond Honed Bench Stone in the home or shop. The Smith's Diamond Honed Bench Stone w/ Plastic Lid includes a micro-tool sharpening pad for small tools and a honing guide for either hand. A choice of coarse or fine grit is indicated on the spine of the diamond sharpening stone.image
