Whether there's a solar eclipse coming or you simply want to take a better look at the sun, you need to be careful. Just like you wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays when on the beach or hanging out in the sun, you need to put filters on your telescope to ensure nothing bad happens to your vision as a result of your solar viewing. A telescope with these protective filters is called a solarscope. It's actually far more important to have these filters when participating in solar observation with a magnified optic, as the powerful lenses will also magnify the harmful effects the sun can have on your eyes.
