There's always been something special about 38 Super Automatic Ammo. While the .38 caliber is often associated with revolver ammo, like .38 Special or the mostly obsolete .38 S&W, the 38 Super Auto round was actually designed for semiautomatic pistols. The cartridge design was based on one of the earliest pistol rounds, .38 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol), which was created by iconic gun designer John Moses Browning. .38 ACP is not the same as .380 ACP, they are distinctly different calibers. Compared to .38 ACP, 38 Super ammo has a slightly shorter case, but much higher pressure.

Performance for 38 Super Auto depends on the size and design of both the firearm and the ammunition. A standard 130-grain FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) 38 Super bullet has a muzzle velocity of 1,215 fps (feet per second) while 38 Super +P ammo equipped with a 115-grain bullet has a muzzle velocity of 1,130 fps and 326 ft-lb (foot-pounds) of energy. 38 Super hollow points weighing 110 grains have a muzzle velocity of 1,160 fps. This makes the caliber a great choice for self-defense.

Can I use .38 Super in my .38 Special?

No, 38 Super Automatic (aka 38 Super Auto, aka 38 Super) is a completely different caliber, chamber, and cartridge than the .38 Special (aka 38 SPL).

What bullets does a 38 Super take?

The 38 Super Auto uses a bullet with a diameter of 0.356 inches (9.04mm), usually between 110gr and 130 grain. They can be found in FMJ (Full Metal Jacket), HP (Hollow Point), and JHP (Jacketed Hollow Point), much like many handgun bullets.

38 Super Auto ammo (cartridges) boxes may be marked as 38 Super, 38 Super +P, 38 Super Auto, 38 Super Automatic, 38 Super Automatic +P, or sometimes the metric designation 9x23mmSR.

Can you shoot 9mm in a 38 Super?

According to SAAMI (Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute, Inc), they are not interchangeable cartridges, and therefore you should not attempt to fire 9mm Luger in a 38 Super Auto or vice versa.
